Final Destination is the story of Alex(Devon Sawa) and some of his classmates who get thrown off a plane after he has a premonition of it's explosion. Once it takes off however the plane does explode and Death comes back to kill them one by one. If it sounds like it would make a good X-Files episode that's because it was written by former X-Files writers Glen Morgan and James Wong along with Jeffrey Reddick, James Wong also directed.
The film, released by New Line, is shown in a widescreen format and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions and comes with and english 5.1 Surround Sound audio track and an english 2 channel Stereo Surround Sound audio track as well. English subtitles are also included.
The special features included are three audio commentary tracks, two deleted scenes and an alternate ending, two documentaries, two games, a theatrical trailer, cast and crew information as well as DVD-ROM features.
The first audio commentary track by writer/director James Wong, writer/producer Glen Morgan, editor James Coblentz and writer Jeffrey Reddick is very informative and interesting to listen to as they reveal all the hints of death throughout the film. Also discussed are the background on the characters names, info on the making of the film and anecdotes from the set. The second audio commentary track with cast members Devon Sawa(Alex), Kerr Smith(Carter), Kristin Cloke(Ms. Lewton) and Chad E. Donella(Tod) is mainly anecdotal but still worth a listen. And finally we have a 5.1 Isolated Score that includes audio commentary by composer Shirley Walker. This is the most technical commentary track although it only deals with the musical aspect it's still interesting to listen to if you're interested in finding out how the music for a film is created.
The two deleted scenes that are included were cut once the ending was changed. The scenes deal with a romantic storyline between Alex and Clear but since test audiences didn't like the original ending(which is included on the disc) the scenes had to be cut as well and a new ending was shot at a cost of two million dollars.
The first documentary is called "A Look At Test Screenings"(13:18) and it reveals the process that goes into testing a film with an audience and what happens if it doesn't test well. The second documentary is called "Premonitions"(19:37) and it's a look at Pam Coronado whose a real life psychic investigator who has helped solve many unsolved crimes.
There are also two set top games that are included. The first one is a death clock. You're asked to answer several questions about your health and it will attempt to reveal when you're going to die. But remember this is just for fun and it doesn't mean anything. The second game is a psychic test in which you are given five different cards with a different sign on each(square, circle, star, plus sign and squiggly lines)and you have twenty-five chances to guess which one is going to be the right one. After the test it gives you a rating and according to how many cards you got right they list what your chances are that you've got a psychic ability.
Rounding off the extras are cast and crew information, the film's theatrical trailer and some DVD-ROM content. This is a good horror flick with a good story, lots of suspense and a lot of blood. If you're into horror movies you're going to enjoy Final Destination.
