It was creepy 20 years ago, and it's creepy now. I'm talking about "Taxi Driver," the mid-70s shocker that catapulted Martin Scorsese as a front runner director. This movie as shot Robert De Niro to stardom and Jodie Foster out of child stardom. Reviled in some circles at the time as a irresponsible and paranoid urban nightmare and blamed a few years later for an assassination attempt on Ron Reagan, "Taxi Driver" holds up as a landmark in American cinema

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
This is the harrowing tale of one mans journey into an urban decay of a city and his crumbling life. Robert De Niro gives probably one of his most chilling performances as the taxi driver of the films title Travis Bickle. Travis is back endlessly wandering the streets of New York after serving his time in the marines and finding it difficult to fit back into society. He is indeed a lonely and tortured man as you can imagine. What he comes back to is the place he fought so hard for and he doesn't like what he sees. He is a victim of Insomnia and plays his nocturnal activities to his advantage and gets himself a job as a taxi driver allowing him to ply his trade during the dark hours of the night. Throughout the film he becomes more mentally unstable and you get to watch his brilliantly played out decline into madness.
Meanwhile Travis has become friendly with twelve year old hooker Iris (Jodie Foster) and attempts to rescue her from her pimp and lover, Matthew (Harvey Keitel). In a coffeeshop scene, which probably set the tone for so many other coffeeshop scenes through the years, he has an important conversation with Iris in which he states his wish that Iris go back home. He also sets up a meeting with her for later on that day. In between those two meetings, he cuts his hair into a Mohawk, and tries to assassinate the Senator (but runs away when he is noticed). In a bloody climax, he frees Iris by killing Matthew, Iris' john, and the hotel manager who turns a blind eye to the underage sex thing. He gets badly wounded, but recovers and is turned into a hero by the media.
