In the three long years since the release of the dazzling "Pulp Fiction," Quentin Tarantino fans have wondered if the maverick director has still got it. The answer is yes, but he's really slowed it down. "Jackie Brown", adapted from Elmore Leonard's 1995 best-seller "Rum Punch," is a sluggish, but satisfying character study masked as a crime caper. While Tarantino's revered hair-trigger pacing is absent, he reveals new depths of filmmaking skill, while presenting some exceptionally well-drawn characters.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A Pam Grier stars airline stewardess Jackie Brown, who supplements her meager income by smuggling cash from Mexico into the United States for gunrunner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). All's well until she's caught by the Feds who give her the option of going to jail, or helping them catch her boss. That's the simple version of the story. Actually, Jackie Brown is a complicated story of a woman trapped by her gangster boss, and scheming FBI agents. Grier, who gives an Oscar worthy performance, thinks she had a plan to fix both her boss and the cops, and getaway with the loot.
The black humor and one-liners of Jackie Brown are totally Tarantino, like the moment when the veins pop out on Ordell's forehead. It's a quiet moment in the front seat of a van, he's sitting there next to Louis, he's just heard that he's lost his retirement fund of $500,000, and he's thinking hard. Quentin Tarantino lets him think, Just holds the shot, nothing happening. Then Ordell looks up and says, "It's Jackie Brown."
He's absolutely right. She's stolen his money. In the movies people like him hardly ever need to think. The director has done all their thinking for them. One of the pleasures of "Jackie Brown"
