This fateful weekend we rented Ringu. For those who aren't knowledgeable in horror movies, that is the original version of The Ring which is Japanese. By the way, if you didn't know that then what are you doing here?? Anyway, it was quite interesting to watch once we got past the fact that the movie was entirely in Japanese and we had to read subtitles for 96 minutes. The plot was the exact same, although the storyline slightly varied. If you watch both the American and Japanese verisons, you'll get it. Otherwise just take our word for it. The Japanese filmmakers didn't use a lot of the techniques that made the American version good. To sum it up: good plot, mediocre movie. Then a rare occurence, for lack of a better word, occured. We started thinking. Then something even more rare happened. We had a good idea. If Japanese horror movies aren't that scary, why not market our movies primarily in Japan? If our movies are really scary, we'll go down as Japanese legends that came from America. If our movies aren't that scary, we'll still be considered great filmmakers! We'd better start learning Japanese...
