Best Actor
Wallace Beery:
The Champ
Best Actress
Helen Hayes:
The Sin of Madelon Claudet
When the Best Actor Award was handed out, it was given to Fredric March.  It wasn't until the end of the ceremony that Conrad Nagel was advised to call Wallace Beery to the podium.  The voting was so close, the Academy was forced to call its first tie. The first lady of Broadway followed her husband, writer, Charles MacAurther to Hollywood, where he gave her her first film role.  The movie was given mixed reviews, leaving many to believe that it was reputation over performance, that won Hayes her first Oscar.
Best Actor
Fredric March:
Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde
Nominee
Marie Dressler:
Emma
March commented on the tie vote, by calling attention to the fact that both he and Beery recently adopted children.  "It seems a little odd that we were both given the award for best male performance of the year." One of the top box office stars of the day, and still riding off the popularity of Min and Bill, Dressler found herself nominated for a second time.  She would pass away of cancer within three years.
Nominee
Alfred Lunt:

The Guardsman
Nominee
Lynn Fontaine: The Guardsman

The quintessential acting couple, Lunt and Fontaine found bigger success on Broadway, where they produced and starred in countless plays.  Aside from The Guardsman, and some special appearances, they did very little film work.  For those not familiar with the couple, you may remember the recurring sketch on the Carol Burnett Show where she and Harvey Korman spoofed the acting couple.
