A titration is a process for ascertaining the quantity of a chemical constituent in a compound by means of a liquid of known strength. In other words, it is a method of finding out how much of one chemical is in a mixture of chemicals. An acid or base reacting with the chemical can indicate the number of moles present by calculating the ration of moles of the acid/base to moles of the unknown after a complete reaction.
To find an accurate volume in ML of the acid/base used, the acid/base is poured into a burette. By adding phenolphthalein to the unknown voulme of soultion, a reaction can be seen as the solution turns pink. The amount of acid/base drained from the burette is used in a ratio to find the number of moles of the unknown.
