King Crab

The king crab is really a living fossil, which today has no surviving relatives. All of its counterparts became extinct millions of years ago. It is one of the most peculiar marine creatures and has not evolved for 200 million years. There are five species of king crab, which live in the sandy shallows and in the water on sandy beaches. It is sometimes thought that the king crab is related to other crabs, but that is not true. It is more closely related to spiders and scorpions, not even being a crustacean at all. During the Jurassic period, the warm seas all over the world were full of king crabs.
