European Black Widow
The European black widow is one of the most notorious members of the family Theriidae which is made up of nearly 1,400 species. It can be found throughout southern Europe. Its appearance is unmistakable, it has an almost spherical black abdomen with 13 crimson blotches on it, one in the shape of an hourglass. Closely related to the European black widow is the much more dangerous American black widow, whose bite is fatal in a small percentage of cases.
