Somethin' Fishy

Hmmm

Well, back here at camp swampy things are getting a little odd. While I was on vacation, the plecos were given just 2 algae wafers a day - that's one apiece - except that the big one (the one with the big belly) eats both of them as soon as they hit the floor of the tank, leaving the smaller one to forage for what little algae there is.

By cell phone, everything sounded just fine - but here it is two very busy weeks later and Mr. Big Belly's belly hasn't really changed. They ARE starving to death, slowly though, so I increased the algae tablets to 4 a day, changed the filters, added some distilled water, and prayed over them. They're swimming in holy water now. But that belly hasn't changed. Not a bit.

Could it be that the pleco is just shaped that way? I mean, after all, he's a BIG fish. We're way past Guppy and getting into Trout! I'm going to continue the 4 tablets a day for another few days and see if the pleco's don't look as ... spiney. They looked like they were all bones a couple of days ago. This afternoon, they're looking a little more satisfied and just a bit less like consentration camp victims.

Plecos can live 20 years. I highly suggest that if you are setting up a tank - you don't start with plecos. They just grow and grow and grow... Give me a fish like a beta that just sort of hangs out and makes frownie faces at you for two or three years... or a swordfish that will hang out for a while and then one day just sort of disappear once it's great grandfishes are born.

Virtual Fishing

I'm in Stone Mountain, GA on vacation, so I have very little news about my
fish. Before I left, my biggest pl*co had a slightly large belly and so I
went scampering off to find out what was up - was it pregnant?! Well, as it
turns out, pl*cos can get "big belly" for a number of reasons; too much
food, hard water, intestinal worms, or infections.

My plan was to stop feeding them for a couple of days, change a few gallons
of water per day and then if that one still had a big belly, I'd give it
some medicine. I got word today via cell phone (Isn't technology great?!)
that the pl*co with a big belly has gotten a little better and isn't as fat
as before. So, maybe it's that I overfed them.

I guess we'll find out when I get home on Sunday (or Tuesday depending on
whether I can get a grip on my panic attacks :( ).

Happy Fishing!

There is a first time for everything.

I thought I would set up this site so I can talk about my fish as I learn more. I know very little about fish and even less about blogs!

I started with a betta from walmart in a 1 gallon fish bowl. He lived three and a half years and died of old age. But that one little fish was so interesting to watch. He reminded me of that screen saver from way back when - the guy on the island who never gets off. He was blue and cute and so when he died, I went back to walmart to get another fish. When I got there, I found a red Betta that I decided to get, but there was this other one that was not really blue and not really red - he looked so sad in his 1/4" of water that I got another bowl and took that one home too.

Since those were pretty fun and I had a 29 gallon aquarium just sitting around, I decided to set it up and find some fish that could live together. After the tank ran for about two weeks, I went to this fish store down the road and I told the man I was just starting out and needed some good beginner fish. He sold me 12 zebra danio and two common plecos. I wasn't really thrilled with the danios. There were all these other fish that were red and blue and spotted and stuff, but I brought them home and put them in the tank with the plecos.

It's now three years later.

The last of the bettas died this week. I have 9 danios left out of the original 12. And the plecos are approximately 11" long. They're all housed in a 55 gallon aquarium with lots of glass stones and a great big fake log and a turned over flower pot and lots of plants - both real and fake. The danios turned out to be pretty interesting fish. They breed every morning at "dawn" - when the light comes on anyway.

The eggs are little white specks that seem to hatch after about 5 days. The little fry fishies look like tiny mosquito larvae. They spend up to a week under the gravel between cracks and nooks and then - the danios eat them.
