Somethin' Fishy
Friday, 25 March 2005
There is a first time for everything.

I thought I would set up this site so I can talk about my fish as I learn more. I know very little about fish and even less about blogs!

I started with a betta from walmart in a 1 gallon fish bowl. He lived three and a half years and died of old age. But that one little fish was so interesting to watch. He reminded me of that screen saver from way back when - the guy on the island who never gets off. He was blue and cute and so when he died, I went back to walmart to get another fish. When I got there, I found a red Betta that I decided to get, but there was this other one that was not really blue and not really red - he looked so sad in his 1/4" of water that I got another bowl and took that one home too.

Since those were pretty fun and I had a 29 gallon aquarium just sitting around, I decided to set it up and find some fish that could live together. After the tank ran for about two weeks, I went to this fish store down the road and I told the man I was just starting out and needed some good beginner fish. He sold me 12 zebra danio and two common plecos. I wasn't really thrilled with the danios. There were all these other fish that were red and blue and spotted and stuff, but I brought them home and put them in the tank with the plecos.

It's now three years later.

The last of the bettas died this week. I have 9 danios left out of the original 12. And the plecos are approximately 11" long. They're all housed in a 55 gallon aquarium with lots of glass stones and a great big fake log and a turned over flower pot and lots of plants - both real and fake. The danios turned out to be pretty interesting fish. They breed every morning at "dawn" - when the light comes on anyway.

The eggs are little white specks that seem to hatch after about 5 days. The little fry fishies look like tiny mosquito larvae. They spend up to a week under the gravel between cracks and nooks and then - the danios eat them.
