Burroughs discovered the cut-up in 1959. The cutup is a mechanical method of juxtaposition in which Burroughs literally cut up passages of prose by himself and other writers and then pastes them back together at random -- the literary equivalent of the collage. Throughout the 1960s Burroughs and artist Brion Gysin collaborated on cutup experiments in many media including novels, films and art. With this experimental prose method, Burroughs made use of all contemporary media and popular culture, a revolution which has doubtlessly contributed to the modern day idea of 'multimedia'.
