Ok, this is sort of random, but here is some information on the fourth dimension.

I mean, I thought this would just be sort of interesting--I've wondered what the 4th dimention was (or is) and found it very confusing. . .but I thought I'd share this with you anyway. I had to write a speech (the FINAL speech) on this topic--so here is most of what I said to my classmates in our speech "classroom."

Lets see. In our world, we know of zero dimensions, one, two, and three. An object with zero dimensions would simply be a point, infinitely small. An object with one dimension is a line, infinitely long, made by putting points together on top of each other. Something with two dimensions is a plane or is on one. Such as a shape. Because a shape is on a plane. A plane is constructed by putting lines on top of each other. Something with three dimensions, such as a cube, is made by stacking planes or shapes on top of one another.

But what is the fourth dimension? This has been a topic of debate since Einstein's time, and will probably continue until the fourth dimension is somehow made visible to the human eye. Some people believe that the fourth dimension is time. This means that because of the fourth dimension humans should be able to travel within time. But then this brings up much conflict and many paradoxes. One such paradox is the "Grandfather Paradox." This states basically that, traveling in time, you could go back in time and kill your grandfather, then your parents wouldn't be born. But neither would you. But if you weren't born, how did you travel back in time in order to kill your grandfather?

Some people simply believe that there is no fourth dimension. Or that the fourth dimension isn't available to our world and life here on earth, or that it is present but we just don't know it. For instance, if you are in the two dimension world of traveling, on a train with a glass floor, the train can only go front and back. But sometimes the track is curved, bringing you into a different dimension. But you would be unaware of it, because, looking through the glass bottom of the train, you would see only that the train is going front and back. So we may be in the fourth dimension as well as the zeroeth and the first and the second and the third and just not know it.

After researching, I believe that the fourth dimension is spacial. So it can have something similar to volume. Because if the all the dimensions we have deal with points and length and area and volume, how come the fourth dimension can be special and be time? Logically, shouldn't the fourth dimension be spacial too? See, the first dimension is depicted as x. The second as x^2. The third x^3. So the spacial area of the fourth should be shown as x^4, right? Some people came up with the theory of what they call a hypercube. But I don't get what is so special about it. It just looks like a bigger cube to me.

But others came up with something else. How do you draw cubes? I draw two squares and then connect the vertices. So shouldn't a fourth dimension object be drawn as two cubes with their vertices connected? But it is hard to visualize. We are trapped in a world in which we know only of three dimensions and cannot even begin to imagine the fourth.

Let's connect the dimensions to transportation. Lets see. In a world with zero dimensions, you'd be. . .you. Except you would only be able to stay in one spot and not move at all. In a two dimension world, you'd be on a train with a straight railroad and you'd be only able to move front and back. In a world with two dimensions, you'd be in a car, driving front, back, left, and right. But in a world with three dimensions, you would be in a helicopter, able to travel front, back, left, right, up, and down. In a fourth dimension world, well, I began to think about it and I seriously thought I had it when I said to myself, "Oh, the helicopters can go diagonal!" until I realized that that diagonal is just a mixture of left, forward, and up or such. Then I got disappointed. But again, if the professional scientist people can't figure it out, who am I to think I'm right for even a second? Millisecond?

See, there are still zillions of questions that are unanswered. Such as: Are there even more than three dimensions? Is there a fifth dimension? Are there an infinite amount of dimensions? What will we, as humans, be able to do with the knowledge and power of the dimensions on our side? But before we answer the more complicated questions, we definitely need to figure out what the fourth dimension is first. Now you can all stop thinking about this topic, and or go and get some Tylenol so your head will not split in two.
