Adoption

Garters are very accessible pets, easy to find in the wild and easy to bring into someone's home and life. However, some owners find their snakes to be more than they bargained for. That is why I have set up this adoption page: to adopt in any animals from unwanting or overwhelmed owners. I am willing to take in snakes of any age and species, so long as they are garters! I will also rehabilitate snakes that have been found injured in the wild.

To those who are interested in surrendering animals, you should know that they will be treated as pets. If wild garters cannot be brought back to releasable condition, I'll keep them as my pets and make sure they live comfortably. Neither captive-bred or wild adoptees will ever be sold.

To offer a snake for adoption: First of all, please contact me! I will assist in getting the snake into a transportable condition. If any of you live in or around the capital/southern New York area, I can meet you to pick up the animal personally. Otherwise, I will help to defer shipping costs.

Please keep in mind that many people think that since garters are a native snake to North America, they can be safely released from long-term captivity into the wild. This is simply not true, these animals will die. Also, morphs that are common in the pet trade like albinos are rare in the wild because their appearance is a magnet to predators. These have even less of a chance of surviving in the wild. I am offering this adoption program as a means for pet owners or good samaritans to be assured that these animals will be given a healthy space and human companionship for the rest of their lives. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, at the address below.
