At the heart of Greek tragedy lies the fear of mortals' infallible pain and sorrow. Moral attitudes prevail despite tragedies, for example murder, rape and mutilation. The assembled people pay painstaking attention to the adaptation of the familiar tale that the playwright based on legends of royal families. The players wore elaborate masks designed to amplify their sound, platform shoes, and long robes that gave an otherworldly quality. The plots dealt with fundamental human issues difficult to easily solve, for example the mandates of state versus the morals of the individuals or divine law versus human law. Aristotle believed that tragedies should purge the listeners. The viewers had orders to seek modest lives and not aim too high.
The works of only three Grecian playwrights still survive- Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides.
