Coach Michael Miragliuolo is in his 9th season as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Green Hope High School. The team has built a tradition of excellence in a relatively short amount of time as the school is in its 11th year of existence, yet has fielded the largest cross country team in the state and one of the largest in the nation for the past several years. In his 9 years at the helm, the Falcons have an impressive list of accomplishments.

The men’s team has an overall record (wins and losses vs. individual teams) of over 80%, has won 7 consecutive Tri-8(Tri-9) Conference titles, and won back-to-back 4A Mideast regional championships in 2003 and 2004, with a runner-up finish in 2002. The Men won Reg. again in '07 and came up short on winning states The women’s team has an overall record of over 80% as well in that period and has also yielded 5 straight Tri-8(Tri-9) Conference titles, with 6th in '08 and back-to-back regional titles in 2003 and 2004. Won Reg. in '08 and State runner-up in '08 Coach Miragliuolo was named Tri-8 Boys Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 and named Girls Coach of the Year in 2002, 2003, and 2005. In addition, both teams compete in the top invitational meets in North Carolina, including the nationally-recognized Great American Cross Country Festival, the Providence Invitational in Charlotte NC, the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, the 5x2500 Hagan Stone Relay, the Conference Clash at SAS soccer park, the Greensboro Invitational at Hagan Stone Park, and the 4-Runners Only Invitational at Tanglewood Park.

Coach Miragliuolo was born in Kingstree, South Carolina and moved with his family to Bangor, Maine. He graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School where he played varsity basketball for 3 years, varsity baseball for 4 years, ran varsity cross country for 3 years (5 including being a member of the team as a 7th and 8th grader; PR: 17:12), and played varsity golf for 1 year. While spending 1 year at the University of Southern Maine, Miragliuolo coached a 7th and 8th grade boys and girls basketball teams. In December 1995 he graduated from the University of Tennessee (1 semester early), where he was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, with a BA in History.

The spring of 1996 saw Miragliuolo in 2 student teaching positions and serving as the head JV baseball coach at his alma mater. For the next 5 years he taught and coached at John Bapst Memorial, a private college preparatory school in Bangor. While at John Bapst, Miragliuolo taught AP U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History I, U.S. History II, Sociology, Physical Education, and Contemporary Society. He also filled the roles of Yearbook Advisor for 2 years, Outing Club Advisor for 4 years, Paintball Club Advisor for 5 years, Freshman Boys Basketball Coach for 1 year, JV Boys Basketball Coach for 3 years, Varsity Boys Basketball Coach for 1 year, JV Boys Baseball Coach for 5 years, Varsity Baseball Coach for 1 year, JV Boys Soccer Coach for 1 year, Varsity Girls Soccer Coach for 3 years, Project Graduation Coordinator for 3 years, Senior Night Coordinator for 3 years, and Graduation Coordinator for 3 years.

In the summer of 2001 Coach Miragliuolo accepted a job at Green Hope High School and has taught AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government, ELP, Honors Civics and Economics, Honors Law and Justice, Honors Seminar, and Honors World History at the school. He has also served 5 years as an assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach and is in the middle of his 5th year as the head Varsity Baseball Coach. Coach Miragliuolo’s Falcon baseball team has won conference titles in 3 of his first 4 years and qualified for the state playoffs all 4 years. He also won the conference baseball Coach of the Year award in 2002 and 2004 and was named North Carolina Region 3 Baseball Coach of the Year in 2005.

Coach Miragliuolo lives in Cary and spends much of his summer traveling, as he owns a home in Bangor, Maine and takes graduating seniors to the Greek Isles each June.

Collins Coach Collins

Coach Roger Collins is in his 8th year of working with runners and is the head track and field coach(assistant distance coach as he is pursing his Masters in Spanish at NC State) at Green Hope. He spent five years in the Washington, DC area coaching track and cross country at the middle school, high school, and Junior Olympic levels. He is a certified USA Track and Field Level 1 coach. Coach Collins ran track in high school, competing primarily in the 3200. He also ran hurdles and all the relays. Collins ran cross country for one year at the collegiate level at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, before transferring to Penn State University.

During his time in Washington, DC, Coach Collins worked with several athletes through the DC Redwings Track Club who have achieved outstanding success at the high school level. In fact, members of the Redwings took 1st and 2nd places in the 800, 1600, and 3200 at 2005 Maryland state meet. A few summers ago, the Redwings had a 4x800 relay team take 1st place in the intermediate (15-16) girls division, setting a new national youth record time of 9:03.74. In addition, DC Redwings runners have been featured in such publications as Runners World and Washingtonian magazine. Collins began teaching as a Spanish teacher at Green Hope in 2005.

Coach Collins grew up in Hanover, Pennsylvania and lived there through high school. At Penn State, he received a BA in history with a minor in Spanish. In the fall of 1998, Collins studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain, one of the oldest universities in Europe. After graduating from Penn State in May, 2000, he moved to Washington, DC through the Teach for America (TFA) program. Through TFA, Collins taught 7th grade Spanish at Paul Public Charter School in northwest Washington, DC. Following his third year, Collins moved to Philadelphia to pursue a masters degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating, he moved back to Washington to help develop an athletic and after school program at Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School. This June, Collins moved to Raleigh and began teaching at Green Hope this fall.

Coach Collins lives in Raleigh. When he is not coaching or teaching, he enjoys travelling and following Penn State football.

McLaughlin Coach Gwen Orilio

Gwen Orilio grew up in central New York and went to college in western New York. She has been running track for 10 years now, including 4 years on her college team. Coach Orillio’s favorite event is the long jump, but really likes all of the running and field events. She is now in her fourth year as a cross country coach here at Green Hope.

Coach Orilio is also a 9th grade math teacher and an assistant track and field coach in the spring.
