. . . In His Cadillac Dream

Staring out of his window as the world rushes by
Athur Robinson closes the glass and replies
"I dream of ballerinas and I don't know why?
But I see Cadillacs sailing.
I was born on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay
Maryland and Virginia have faded away
And I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today
So I am endlessly waiting
I had a dream of a black car that shimmers and drives
Down the length of the evening to the carnival's side
In a house where regret is a carousel ride
We are spinning and spinning and spinning . . .
There's a hole in the ceiling down through which I fell
There's a girl in the basement coming out of her shell
And there are people who will say they knew me so well
I may not go to heaven -- I hope that you go to hell!
And the comet is coming in between
Me and the girl that could make it all clean
Out there in the shadow of a modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream
St. Robinson in his dream.
Some people are never quite what they seem
Come on baby come on baby
Lets just get into my car and drive.

Frontman Adam Duritz's comments on the Song:
HOST: The next question from Jan Lickman. I can't figure out what "St. Robinson" is about. Do you have any comments?
ADAM: No. I'm hoping to get a great answer about that song, too.
HOST: OK.
ADAM: No, I'm thinking what it's about. It's sort of about someone sort of -- it's about a guy sort of taking -- kind of criticizing himself, making a joke of himself, and he's sort of laughing at himself for the fact his imagination, in his dreams. Everything's very dramatic and that problems with a girl have to do with a comment, instead of just his own difficulties. And the Cadillac referred to in the song is just a big dream. You know, it's supposed to be that all his life is all these big dreams, you know. No real concrete life, just a series of big dreams.
