The Birding Page of Chris N. Lotz and Catherine Gray

We are extremely enthusiastic birders who live in Cape Town, South Africa. We particularly love tracking down owls. Chris recently (31 December 2002) completed a 2.5 year research stint on hummingbirds at the University of Wyoming, USA. Catherine is currently doing pollen research at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Flammulated Owl. Thanks to the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, these minute owls were found to be common in one of Wyoming's mountain ranges during the summer of 2002. Previously, they were thought only to be rare migrants through this ornithologically poorly-known state. Please e-mail Chris for a report of a short owling trip for Boreal, Flammulated and other owls in Wyoming. (Drawing: Lisa Paine).

Northern Pygmy Owl, near Lyons, Colorado, September 2000. This poor owlet hit a window at 2 pm and took 45 minutes to recover before flying off. R. Davis found a nesting pair of these owls in a Lyons town park in 1994. At least 500 birders observed this pair. (Photo: R. Davis)
