*Why are their eyes so big?
Osamu Tezuka (a.k.a God of anime) one, perhaps, to thanks for this.Osamu took the size of cartoon eyes (such as Betty Boop) in comparison to their head and simply apllied it his cartoon human drawings (many early manga artists were also kookoo for Micky and Bugs bunny). His manga work includes the dearly old classic Astro Boy.
*What's with the funky colored hair?
In the earlier days of manga, everyone was drawn with black hair. The problem this caused was that there was so much black on the page that it would start to look blotchy. Or, as I've now been informed, it was simply too boring in anime where everyone had black hair.
