Basic Biography

  • Born on August 31, 1936
  • Grew up in Monroeville, Alabama
  • Graduated from Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia
  • Moved to Chicago to pursue teaching
  • Taught in Chicago for 14 years
  • Founded Westside Preparatory School in 1975
  • Initiated reform in Chicago school system
  • Created training programs for teachers and school staff
  • Continues to promote education today

Major Contributions and Accomplishments

  • Founded Westside Preparatory School in 1975
  • Offered position of U.S. Secretary of Education by 2 presidents
  • Appeared on 60 Minutes 2 times as well as in a telvision movie
  • Opened Marva Collins Preparatory School in 1990
  • Designed training program for school staff
  • Received honorary doctoral degrees from Dartmouth, Notre Dame, and Amherst College
  • Received the Jefferson Award for the Greatest Public Service Benefitting the Disadvantaged
