Flowery Branch -- As the Michael Vick watch heads for the finish line and the Falcons' injured quarterback moves closer to playing, it's hard to avoid looking at the wreck he'll replace.
On the day after a 23-20 overtime loss at New Orleans in which Kurt Kittner completed 8 of 27 passes for 80 yards and two crippling interceptions, Arthur Blank announced the Falcons would hold open auditions for the starting QB position. Coach Dan Reeves did not comment on the controversial move.
Blank annouced the try-outs would begin Wednesday morning at 10am at Flowery Branch. He stated, "As bad as our quarter back play has been, we decided we needed a change, Anybody can come and try out, allthough prior highschool or college experience is a plus."
Kittner did not talk to the media Monday, and Johnson said little more than he will continue to be a "humble servant."
Reeves, meanwhile, didn't throw a vote of confidence toward Kittner, who was 0-for-9 with one interception and a sack on third downs against the Saints, and 2-for-10 for 14 yards and two interceptions in the second half and overtime combined. "With stats like that, I'd be suprised if anyone could do worse."
"Is he as accurate as we would like him to be throwing the football? No," Reeves said. "Is his decision-making as good as you would like it to be? No." "Will he or Doug be here next year? Probibally not."
While starting the past four games, Kittner completed 37 of 97 passes for 338 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.
Doug Johnson has not faired any better and was benched four games ago.
How does the move go over with the rest of the NFL?
While the move is considered highly contoversial by the NFL, there are no league rules against it.
Dallas Owner Jerry Jones called the move retarded, and was quoted as saying, "Maybe they(the falcons) could comb the local malls for some teen-age girls."
Are there any other changes afoot?
Quentin McCord, who dropped three passes Sunday, including one that would've converted a third down and another on first-and-goal from the Saints' 9-yard line, won't be the third receiver anymore. He was waived Monday.
With rookie wide receiver LaTarence Dunbar doubtful because of a strained hamstring, rookie wide receiver Terrence Edwards -- who's been in uniform for three games without catching a pass -- may factor into the mix.
"That's definitely going to be part of the process this week," Reeves said, "these guys make way too much to play that way."
Is the sudden success in the running game more about Warrick Dunn's return to the lineup or the offensive line?
With 340 rushing yards in the past two games, including 162 Sunday, Dunn has put together the best back-to-back performances of his seven-year career. When asked about his break-out performance Dunn stated, "Talk to Keyshawn, they need to just give me the damn ball."
"I'm not real happy with Warrick's comments today," Reeves later said, "I hope he's not writing checks his ass can't cash."
