St Lucia Scout Group

Scouting began in 1908 and has grown to become the largest voluntary youth organisation in the world. Today, Scouting is recognised as a group providing high standards that encourage our children to become worthy and useful members of our community.

In declining moral standards in our community today, Scouting stands like a beacon, encouraging responsibility, good values, friendships, leadership and other useful life skills including first aid and bushcraft. The St Lucia Scout Group, and the Scouting system as a whole, believes that the best two ways to learn is to have fun and put the skills into practice, and so strive to do both at the same time. Apart from doing things like camps and construction nights at the den, a certain amount of time is spent just having fun and doing nothing in particular, for instance, every six months in the Scout section a Patrol will have a Patrol Activity night where they go to Pizza Hut together, or go iceskating, and while to the participants it's just fun, to parents it's keeping the youth off the streets and being more active.

The St Lucia Scout Group was formed in 1947 and last year we had our 50th anniversary. We held a successful and very enjoyable rally in August which many local dignitories attended. Plans were also officially unveiled for the renovation of the Cub den (which is just being finished now.)

The St Lucia Group Leader is Brian Purvis (Roo), who went through the scouting system himself and subsequently had two sons who did the same, with one, Mark, going on to form and become the St Lucia Venturer Leader.
