Okay, this page is definitely a work in progress, but this is some of the basic info on astral projection.

First thing is first, the difference between astral projection and out of body experiences. I don't know how many times I have heard someone get excited about projecting for the first time and seeing their body. You do NOT see your body during astral projection. Out of body experiences take place on the physical plane; you can see the room you're in, you can see your body, you can go see your friend (granted, they may not be able to see you. You'll essentially be like a ghost). Astral projection, however, takes place on the astral plane and not the physical, thus you won't see those things.

So, what does the astral plane look like then? In my experience it has been black with patterns and colors everywhere. The first few times you actually manage to project, you might not be able to make out very many sharp images. Entities and people may appear to just be globs of color, but these images sharpen over time with practice. What you see on the plane is unlimited. You may see things you didn't believe existed (dragons, faeries, unicorns, etc.), but many people who astral project will tell you that you have a good chance in seeing them.

Yes, projection is very difficult to master for a lot of people. I've talked to too many people who tried and tried and then gave up and stopped believing in it. But the majority CAN learn to astral project with time and patience; you may get it on your first try, or it could take over a year. Don't get discouraged. Astral projection is a bitch to get the hang of because you have to relax a LOT, almost to the point of sleep, and it's hard for people to not get destracted by sounds or their thoughts or fall asleep. You WILL get the hang of it over time.

So, the burning question. HOW do you astral project? Below, I have outlined the basic method that I've used and most people I've talked to use. If you want to change it and personalize it, feel free.

1) A comfy position is ESSENTIAL, as you'll be in that position and not moving for however long you intend to do this. Laying down or sitting in a comfy chair is usually preferred. Other things that you need are a destraction-free area (no screaming children, no phone, no IM ringer going off the hook; Silence or quiet music is most preferred), darker lighting is also better in my experience as it allows your eyes to relax more easily and you can see the colors more vividly against black versus light.

2) NEXT you concentrate on your body and systematically make every part of you relax individually. Most people start at their feet and work their way up (feet, ankles, shins, knees, thighs, hips, lower back and stomach area, middle torso, chest and heart/breathing, shoulders, upper arms, elbows, lower arms, wrists, hands, fingers, neck  then head). I personally do this sequence backwards but it's completely up to you how you do it, experiement with it.

3) During this relaxation time, you'll start to see colors (eyes closed is easiest) and pay less attention to your body.  The colors are your own aura, so you can watch them whenever you want, for however long you want. After a bit, you may start feel your body start to vibrate lightly and hear whispering; if you don't, don't worry about it, I only do half the time, but it's a really nifty thing to go through if you do; just don't let it freak you out into wake up.  This signifies that you're slightly separate from your body, you're still near it, but you're out. You'll still be dimly aware of your body and still feel it, but this is minimal.

4) This is when I ALWAYS hear about people freaking out the first few times they try it. They're finally out of their body, they see colors and patterns, and then they think that they cannot get back to their body. They freak themselves out so much that they immediately return to their body and "wake up" and are disappointed that they did. You do NOT have to worry about "losing" connection with your body. You are connected to your body until the day it dies and you are released, so relax and feel free to wander from your body as much as you want. When you want to go back to it, just start to think about it, start feeling from it again. Feel the bed or chair it's on and start to wake it up. You'll be back in your body before you realize it.

5) Now is the fun part. Once you're comfortable exploring you aura and the area immediately around you you can go anywhere. Think of things you want to see (yes, if you want to see a dragon, you can, just think about one), or people you want to see. If you can't really think of anyone or thing in particular, just think about moving forward and you will. Explore all you want and see what critters or entities you may run into.

6) As a precaution, you may want to take the time to create a shield before you head out into the astral plane. Granted attacks are fairly rare, but you should at least have some protection, ne? A great site that discusses how to do it and has good visuals for it is http://www.psipog.net/show.php?id=38. I HIGHLY recommend it and if you plan to astral more than once or twice, I definitely suggest making some form of a shield.

Well, that's about it for my introduction to astral projetion. I hope it helps those of you out who didn't know about it or didn't know how to do it. And if you're still having trouble, I recommend you look up salvia divinorum, a type of sage that you can smoke to help relax enough to make it a lot easier. Up to you! Have fun exploring the astral plane when you get the chance. ^_^
