The Democratic Republic St Rudolf is a small island in the Pacific. Untouched until rather recently, the island has only one major settlement at New Amsterdam. Inhabited by about 30 people, the island is ruled by a governor from a building known as the Blue House, named such because it is washed in a pale blue paint, with orange bricks around the edges. The island has a church, a GP and a small wharf. There's a very small library also, but it only has about 50 books in it, the books inside decided by a referendum. A little schooner, the SRS (St Rudolf ship) Indefatigable delivers supplies takes away the island's produce to be sold to mainstream civilization. Everyone contributes to exports; all citizens grow sugar to support the small rum industry. The rum is sold on the basis of its rarity. 'New Amsterdam Rum' is hawked around the world as being wine for the person 'who wants it all', with only around one hundred bottles made per year. The income from the exports is distributed equally to everyone who contributes. There's a very, very small navy, whose only ship is the Indefatigable, which has a PK machine gun mounted on the back to scare illegal fishing boats away. The only soldiers are the sailors who all have revolvers at their belts. Should St Rudolf be ever invaded, ("Not bloody likely!", cries the governor) the citizens are trained in the art of rapid surrender. Every 5 years there is an election. Since the current governor is the only person on the island who really wants to run St Rudolf, he tends to win.
