'Nami here. I was going to write this from Setsuna's point of view, but she wouldn't write it in the first place...so here goes. (E-mail me if you think I have anything off, k?)
Meiou Setsuna is really centuries old, because unlike the other senshi she never died in the Silver Millennium, and so was never reincarnated. However at the Gate of Time there is no time, so she doesn't age. At least, that's my guess. She looks to be around 19.
Setsuna is a very patient, quiet, and kind woman. She's probably the easiest to get along with of all the senshi. However when it comes to her responsibilities as a soldier she is unforgiving, and can be very cruel. (For instance, she wanted to kill Hotaru in Sailor Moon S). She is very smart (appearing in the manga as a nurse, and in the anime as something of a scientist/computer expert), but more than that she is wise. In many cases she gives advice to the other girls, as well as being an extremely calming influence on Chibi-Usa.
She is a very solitary figure in the anime-- mostly showing up and fighting with Uranus and Neptune, but not really 'with' them, because their close bond excludes her. Not to mention the fact that for who knows how long she's been guarding the gate of time, all alone. She is probably very lonely, but her friendship with Chibi-Usa may help alleviate some of the pain. She and Chibi-Usa are incredibly close-- so close that Setsuna probably loves her as her own daughter. However Chibi-Usa isn't her daughter, she's Sailor Moon's daughter (maybe ^_^-- go here to investigate). No matter how kind Setsuna is, that has to rankle. I mean, Usagi doesn't exactly act like she deserves to have a daughter. Some people (myself included ^_^) have noticed that Setsuna would really be a better match for Mamoru as well. (Interested? Go here). So add that altogether, and imagine how it must feel to be her:
The only reason she is on earth and in the company of people is because she and the outer senshi have evidently failed in their mission to prevent enemies from entering the galaxy (this to a woman whose duty is her life). And even though for the first time in her (very long) life she is surrounded by people, she is also surrounded by a world she isn't really a part of, no matter how much she wants to be. Everyday she can be with Chibi-Usa, but also be reminded that Chibi-Usa has a family, a father, and -- most of all -- a mother. Add to that (possibly) seeing the man she loves completely out of her reach, and not daring to do anything about it, because it would disrupt the future, and probably make it so the child she loves was never born.
I heard somewhere her English name (Trista) means melancholy. Seems fitting, doesn't it?
But even through all this emotional trouble-- which she never even suggests to anyone-- she perseveres. She is a model soldier, and in the manga even manages to scrap up some bit of domestic contentment (with Hotaru, Michiru, and Haruka). In both versions, she is strong and admirable, and in the manga pretty cool, too. She gets much better outfits there, some that suggest she hits the clubs at night, instead of staying home watching a test tube. ^_^
