No one realized a few short hours later our entire world would be turned upside down by a ruthless cold blooded attack on Americans. No one would dare attack the United States, the most powerful nation in the world. Our shores have been protected for years and no one could match our military power. We were invincible - so we thought. By noon, many of us witnessed on television the collapse of two 110 story building and the loss of thousands of lives in and around those buildings. At the same time, lives across the nation and around the world suffered the loss of a dad, mom, husband, wife, brother, sister, son or daughter. What happened to America is horrific and tragic and will have a lasting affect not only on America, but also the world.
People have started blaming various groups of people. I have even heard some blame God. I am not sure who is to blame or why these events occurred. I do know that GOD IS IN CONTROL and that the Bible is true. Romans 8:28 says "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." We, as Christians, can help turn this tragic event into something which will Glorify God. When times are bad, I like to focus on the good things I see in the midst of the darkness. I try to put Romans 8:28 into practice. I don't want to down play the severity of the events or the suffering thousands upon thousands of people are going through right now. As Christians, we need to let God's Light shine bright. Don't put the light under a bushel, but bring it out for everyone to see. We have the answer for ALL of the world's troubles. The answer is Jesus. Take this time to witness to family, friends, acquaintances - even total strangers. GOD IS IN CONTROL! If He knows when a sparrow falls and the number of hairs on our head, He surely knows the tragedy we are currently facing!
Now is the time for Christians to speak up and let others know that we have a Mighty Comforter, Someone that can take our burdens upon Himself. Jesus is the One that can mend a broken heart, no amount of money or counseling can do that. I am not asking Christians to start preaching at the top of their lungs from street corners. We can take a much more subtle approach and have a more significant impact on people's lives. We can just send someone a note of encouragement, say a prayer with someone that is depressed - just offer a helping hand or let people know you are there and are praying for them...and then pray for them! I am also asking Christians to pray for the leadership of our country and the leaders around the world. We also need to pray not only for the people directly affected by the tragedy, but also for our nation as a whole and for our allies. It is a time for sore knees!
What do I see? I see families hurting, frightened children, devastation in our land and a nation on the brink of war. But, through the midst of the darkness I also see a nation united, patriotism at an all time high, Congress praying in our Nation's Capital and our President quoting from the Bible. I see people looking to God and others looking for God. I see opportunities for God to work in the lives of Americans like He has never worked before. In the midst of the darkness, I see opportunities for Christians to Glorify God.
