I have two standard grey Chinchillas, actually three, unfortunately, the other died of stress.  Chinchillas hate changes and are not good with car rides.  A sudden change of environment may lead to the death of the Chinchilla.  It is best to keep Chinchillas in a pair.  My Chinchilla have been with me for about three months, they have got used to the cage and the environment.   Occasionally, my dog, Evo will jump up and look what's they are doing.

Currently my Chinchilla is feeding on Mazuri Pellets, Kay Tee Timothy Hay.  They have treats like raisins, dried apple, sun flower seed, and supplemented by soy milk to prevent seizure.

If you intend to keep Chinchillas, I should say they make great pets.  Do read more through the internet or books regarding Chinchillas.

CAUTION

Chinchilla are easily frightened.  They have long-lasting memory that they could remember you for life if you had hurt them before.  They will lose confidence in you.  You may require more time and effort to spend on them in order to regain their trust in you.

DO NOT chase the Chinchilla around in case they jumped out of the cage. Stay cool and let it roam around, give them their favorite treat and lure them to you. Unknowingly, they bump into you and you take this chance to carry them into their cage.

Chinchilla are nocturnal thus, they sleep in the day and are active at night.  Allow them peace during the day or give them a room protected from sound.  A healthy Chin is one that sleeps through peacefully through the day.

If you have a cat or a dog, do not allow the cat/dog to go near the Chin initially.  Give the dog a chance to get use to his new friends while the Chin adjust their new cage.  You may provide a sleeping house for your Chin to hide.

Chinchillas teeth grow without you knowing, and this is one of the causes for death.  Keep their teeth short by providing them with chew blocks.  Available in volcano lava form.

Provide your Chinchilla with clean bedding.  Change bedding at least once a week.  Give them bath-salt shower at least twice each week.

Chin has weak stomach, remember not to feed anything that you are eating.  Restrict their diet to pure Chinchillas' pellets and hay.  Treats to be given sparingly.
