A QuIcK AnD EaSY TimE KillER
Here’s a good way to kill twenty minutes or so and get ‘em speaking. Simple but sweet – all you need are some dice.
Write on the board:
- Where
- When
- Who
- Why
- What
- How
And then beside it something like this:
- Do
- Does
- Did
- Is
- Are
- Were
Students roll the dice twice (or roll two dice, duh) to get two numbers. For example, if you rolled a 1, and then a 4, you have to make a question with 1) Where and 4) Is. “Where is your favorite strip club?” for example. Students work in pairs asking and answering the questions, taking turns to roll the dice.
If the students haven’t studied the past tense yet, you could do something like the following:
- Do
- Do
- Does
- Is
- Is
- Are
So there you are. A swell way to practice question formation, review different tenses and cement the usage differences between the auxiliary verbs. Don’t you feel like a pro. And best of all you don’t have to do a damn thing except sit around and pretend like you’re listening and perhaps correct a mistake or two. You could round it off by having the students roll the dice and ask you some questions, if you’re feeling communicative.
If you don’t happen to have dice, you could just cut up some little pieces of paper and write the question words and auxiliaries on them.
Okay! Class dismissed! Off to the strip bar!
