Medieval
Ghana

Ghana is located
on the West Coast of Africa. Before March 1957 Ghana was called the Gold Coast.
Geographically, Ghana is about 750 km north of the equator on the Gulf of
Guinea. Burkina Faso bound the country on the north, on the west by Cote
d’Ivoire, on the east by Togo and on the south by Gulf of Guinea. It was first
colonised by the Portuguese, French, Dutch and later by the British. Ghana
gained its independence from Britain on March 6, 1957. Ghana's economy is
heavily reliant on agriculture and mining. Agriculture, forestry and fishing
constitute over 40% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). Exports of
gold and cocoa are the primary sources of government revenue and foreign
exchange. Ghana has a tropical climate, characterised most of the year by
moderate temperatures (generally 21-32 degrees C (70-90 degree F), constant
breezes and sunshine. The population in the year 2001 was estimated to be about
19.5 million. The official language is English, however there are various ethnic
groups and about 96 local languages. In Ghana today are: Rich mineral resources
such as gold, diamonds, manganese, bauxite, iron ore and various clay and salt
deposits and extensive rich forest with a wide range of fine tropical hardwoods.
Unique tourist attractions, inviting sunshine, golden beaches and wildlife
parks. The countryside is adorned with a rich cultural heritage, and hospitable
people. The place I like going there is Osu. I often go the to buy food from
Princess Garden Restaurants and sometimes Frankies for ice cream.
