Cathy & the Dolphin

Reporter Mark asked, "The others who were on the boat with you, did you see what happened to them?"....."They died," replied the girl. "He tried to save them, but they grew frightened and swam away from him."....."By 'he,' do you mean the dolphin?" Mark inquired, puzzled....."He is a prince," the girl said....."A prince?" Mark questioned, mouth quirking in surprise....."Yes, a prince," she repeated, chin raised.....

Stardust

He caught me studying him. His eyes were a deep swirling green. He introduced himself. "My name is Jason," Methodically, he added, "I have come from a distant world to research yours. I would be exceedingly grateful if you would help me.".....When I did not answer, his forehead creased and his dark eyebrows drew together, and I heard myself thinking -- mistrust? What a repulsive response. But it was not I thinking.....

The Intangible

The year was 3000 and man still existed on the face of the earth. Geoffrey Raynor, Police Commissioner of the Northern Sector, listened as the Magistrate, standing upon the Dais of Justice, pronounced sentence on the Family of Five -- Death by Dissolution. He amended, however, that the man-child would be spared. The boy had not yet reached the age of biased opinion. He would therefore be placed in the Children's Unit and his thoughts redirected to accept only the Equatable, the Decipherable and the Tangible.....Raynor had been responsible for the capture of the Five. He nodded his satisfaction and approval....when the boy escapes, Raynor is ordered to find him....Raynor fell, but managed to grab on to a rocky protrusion and cling there for dear existence until the mountain quieted.....I AM THE SKY, THE SUN, THE GALAXY, THE UNIVERSE AND BEYOND....."Who said that?" Raynor inquired, and held his breath.....

A Ghost of a Story

Jim shifted nervously in his chair, dislodging a few more cobwebs. "I don't mean to sound facetious," he said, "but don't you think we're insane agreeing to spend the night here? The place reeks of spirits, and I don't mean the drinking kind!".....Tom sat down opposite his friend, accompanied by a spray of dust and mangled cobwebs....."Nothing will happen to us," he replied.....

A Mortal Man

The alley, black and austere, did not phase Mike Shannon. He was accustomed to walking through dark alleys at night. He walked slowly, steadily, his hands hidden in his coat pockets, his eyes downcast, his thoughts deep....In his mind's eye Mike could see her, vividly, as though she walked beside him. She was tall like him. Her hair was a soft ash, her eyes wide and hazel. She was Venus to his Vulture. She had been the very essence of his being.....He was not old. A man in his forties is said to be in his prime. His mind had aged, from disillusionment. And disillusionment now governed his life. This was the reason he walked in the darkness and stillness, and hid by day. This was the cause of the position he held in the Underworld. The rackets were his business. Murder and smuggling were his occupations.....

The Gently Cursed

Not your usual werewolf story.....

The Ugliness Without

Folks had tagged her an old hag. She had few friends. Most persons moved out of noseshot, and looked down those same noses at Tessie, as bent and tilting from side to side, she shuffled by on her daily outings through the neighborhood.....Sparkie was one of the few exceptions. He had moved into the room next to hers last year.....She laughed, or rather she cackled, and smiled up at Sparkie, caught the glimmer of warmth in his tannish eyes, and blushed like a fifteen year-old who has just been favored with a wink from a teenage idol....
