Hood Underside Painting Project

Hood - Before

This is how the car was originally painted - sort of a cream color. There were a few rust patches and a few areas of paint and primer over some small areas. The hinges were covered with dirt and grime as well as 40 years of crud. Removing the hood was done with the help ff my two strong friends (Hot Rod Ron and Dangerous Dewey), a ratchet set, breaker bar, and vice grips. The hardest part of the hood removal was not the lifting of the hood but the wrenching of the stuck bracket bolts. The vice grips were used to hold the bolts on the inner side of the wheel well.

Hood - After

After cleaning. sanding, and painting, the hood underside looks great! I placed the hood CAREFULLY upside down on two sawhorses covered with soft towels to protect the paint on the top of the hood. I was afraid to use a chemical paint remover since some may have dripped around the edges and destroyed the paint on the top of the hood. Instead, sandpaper (40 grit, then 100, then 150, then 220, and then 600) and steel wool was used. Several coats of duplicolor paint were applied and the hood after masking the edges to prevent overspray.

Hinge Repainted

This is the hinge after it was bead blasted and then painted with gloss black spray paint. After this photo was taken I painted the cowl ansd replaced the cowl-hood rubber seal. To return the the previous page, click on the back button on your browser.
