1963 Comet Cowl Repair

Driver's Side Cowl -Before

This is what the driver's side cowl vent looked like before restoration. After years of water entering the cowl through the fresh air vents, the lower section of the cowl showed significant rust and decay. This was typical of Fords of that era. This resulted in fresh air (and water) entering the cowl and blowing beneath the dash onto the feet of the peoplein ther fromt seats.

Driver's Side Cowl -During

The area was reached by climbing under the dash and working upside down! Others have done the repair by removing the fenders, windscreen, and removing the dozens of spot welds, but I was able to gain access with all the body untact. Loose rust was scraped and the area was prepped with degreaser and then meatal primer/etcher. Sections of sheet metal were cut to shape and riveted in as needed. Smaller defects were sealed with POR-15 putty. Some curved sections were repaired with fiberglass soaked in POR-15. The unit was then painted with POR-15 afer all the holes and seams were sealed.

Driver's Side Cowl -Completed

The final procuct was again sealed with POR-15 and is now watertight - no more wet feet in the rain! I was recently caught in a summer thundershower at Hot August Nights (with the top down and the boot fastened) and got drenched - but my feet were dry!
