Hello.

2 EXT. ANYWHERE - DAY 2

Inter cut between Ben and Arthur.

BEN Arthur, did you find out yet?

ARTHUR No I didn’t find out. The TV just broke. I’ve been down here just taking a nap.

BEN Forget the stupid TV. Try the radio! Maybe it’s being broadcast over the radio.

ARTHUR Okay. Let me get out of bed.

Arthur gets up and makes his way to the radio.

ARTHUR (continuing) Alright. (hitting buttons on the radio) Hello? Hey Ben I’m losing you. I think your cell phone is dying.

2. 2 CONTINUED: 2

BEN Arthur! Arthur! Arthur my battery’s low. I think I’m losing you.

ARTHUR Hello? Hello? Oh well.

Arthur hangs up the phone and continues on with the radio. He eventually finds a station.

BROADCASTER Today’s latest news. It’s been a long battle here in Hawaii. The public has long awaited the decision of the court of Hawaii and the courts have voted yes. Homosexuals do have the right to get married. Judge Kevin Chang’s ruling has made history in this country.

Ben comes out of the elevator and walks toward the door.

4 INT. THE APARTMENT - EVENING 4

Ben enters. Arthur rushes over in amazement.

BEN What did they say?

ARTHUR Ben! They said yes! Let’s fucking go to Hawaii.

BEN Alright! Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go!

3.

5 INT. THE APARTMENT - ARTHUR’S ROOM - DAY 5

They are both packing up. Arthur is neat in packing his stuff, taking the time to fold things, matching socks, taking very few things.

6 INT. THE APARTMENT - WHERE BEN IS - DAY 6

Ben takes a box of "junk" and dumps it in the suit case. Throwing all sorts of things in it.

7 INT. THE APARTMENT - ARTHUR’S ROOM - DAY 7

Arthur closes the suitcase, and zippers it easily.

8 INT. THE APARTMENT - WHERE BEN IS - DAY 8

Ben closes the top. It doesn’t close. Ben tries to sit on it, bouncing and trying to get it all crammed in. Frustrated, he throws some stuff out, sits on it, bounces more, till he gets it zippered.

FADE IN:

10 EXT. THE SUNRISE - MORNING 10

We see the early morning.

11 OMITTED 11

12 INT. THE APARTMENT - MORNING 12

Ben is sitting reading the terrible news he has yet to tell Arthur. Arthur enters all happy.

ARTHUR Do you have everything that you need?

BEN Yes. Did you take it out?

4. 12 CONTINUED: 12

ARTHUR Yeah I took it all out. It‘s all out in the car. But we better go because our flight leaves in two hours and we still gotta go to the bank.

BEN Did you read today’s paper?

ARTHUR Who cares about today‘s paper! Let’s go!

Ben throws it at Arthur.

ARTHUR (picking up the paper) What! What’s so important about today’s paper?

Arthur flips through and reads it.

ARTHUR (continuing) Gay people gaining the right to get married in Hawaii yesterday will have major disappointment. The judge has put a stay on his decision allowing gays to marry in the state. That means it is no longer legal for gays to marry in the state of Hawaii until a further decision is made in the state’s supreme court. That however, maybe another two years away.

Arthur looks shocked. A moment of silence goes by.

ARTHUR (continuing) So what are we going to do?

BEN Well, there’s no reason to go to Hawaii.

5. 12 CONTINUED: 12

ARTHUR But Ben, we just bought the tickets. They’re nonrefundable.

BEN Yeah well, what do you wanna do?

ARTHUR Why aren’t you upset is what I’d like to know?

BEN I am upset!

ARTHUR Well you sure don’t seem like it!

BEN Look, in another two years...

ARTHUR Fuck in another two years, Ben! This is ignorance and completely unfair! This country fucking sucks! It just fucking sucks!

Arthur leaves the room to try and cool down. It doesn’t work.

ARTHUR (continuing) And you know what! If we ever get into a war and they draft my ass the first thing I’m gonna tell them is if I’m not good enough to get married in this country, then I sure as hell aint dying for it.

Arthur leaves the room again. We HEAR items being thrown around in anger.

ARTHUR (continuing; throwing things) FUCKING SUCKS BEN!!

6. 12 CONTINUED: 12

BEN Hey! Will you relax.

ARTHUR I wanted to go to Hawaii today, Ben! That was what I wanted to do! And we have to pay for those plane tickets.

BEN I need to tell you something. We’ve been together for three years, and uh, I’m still finishing up a divorce with my wife.

ARTHUR What?

13 INT. ARTHUR’S ROOM - EVENING 13

Arthur is sitting down writing in his journal. We HEAR his thoughts.

ARTHUR Dear Diary. I can’t believe Ben. He’s married to some bitch named Tammy. He was telling me he was always gay and he got married due to peer pressure. I told him to get his stupid wife over soon and get the divorce papers signed. He said okay. I think I took it rather well. I guess regardless of how well you know someone there’s always more to learn. The important thing is we’re going to stay together.

They walk into the living room, standing.

BEN I want a divorce.

TAMMY What!

BEN I want a divorce.

TAMMY What brought that on?

BEN Tammy, I am a homosexual.

Silent for a moment, slowly Tammy goes into a psychotic laugh.

TAMMY You want me to believe that.

More laughing.

BEN I have the papers right here.

Ben’s face is serious.

BEN (continuing) All you need to do is sign them.

TAMMY I’m not signing those. You’re just confused right now.

BEN I’m not confused. You’re confused.

TAMMY What’s his name?

8. 15 CONTINUED: 15

BEN Not that it matters to you but his name is Arthur. We’re going to get married.

TAMMY Men can’t get married in the United States.

BEN Yes we can. In the state of Vermont.

TAMMY So you never loved me? Is that what you’re saying. These past five years didn’t mean anything to you?

BEN That’s not what this is about. In the past five years you still haven’t even figured this out.

TAMMY I didn’t force you to fucking marry me!

BEN I thought that it would change me.

TAMMY Oh shut the fuck up! I’m fucking getting out of here! FUCK YOU!

Tammy slams the door. Ben picks up the divorce papers.

BEN So quit. If you don’t like it, find another job.

ARTHUR Yeah I should. You know I just can’t stand it here anymore. The boss is bitchy, the customers are cranky, the hours suck. You know, and, you know you have a degree in nursing. What the hell are you doing here?

BEN I got my music. That’s what I want to do. It’s, you know, I like this job.

ARTHUR I’m thinking about going back to college. I’m thinking about getting a degree in business.

BEN Really?

ARTHUR Yep! I’m thinking about opening up my own little porno shop.

BEN No shit.

Ben laughs. He is so happy to see Arthur talk about doing something instead of complaining.

BEN (continuing) Well that’s cool. If that’s what you want to do. It’s good to have some goals.

10. 16 CONTINUED: 16

ARTHUR Yeah.

BEN That’s great man! I’m glad. It’s good to see you got some goals. Go for it!

ARTHUR Thanks. (beat) Did you get those divorce papers signed?

BEN That’s another story. My crazy wife, I can’t deal with her. I’m gonna have my attorney give her a call and take care of the whole thing.

17 INT. RESTAURANT - DAY 17

Arthur does the coffee refill check for the customers.

ARTHUR Hi. Would you like some more?

COSTUMER 1 Yes please.

Arthur fills the cup.

COSTUMER 1 Thank you. ARTHUR You’re welcome.

Arthur walks to next table.

ARTHUR You okay?

COSTUMER 2 Yeah.

Arthur walks over to MILDREAD. Mildread is Arthur and Ben’s neighbor.

11. 17 CONTINUED: 17

ARTHUR Do you want more?

MILDREAD Yeah.

Arthur fills the glass.

ARTHUR So how you doing today, Mildread?

Mildread is rude. She doesn’t want to talk to Arthur at all. Arthur walks away.

MILDREAD Hey I want more!

Arthur comes back.

ARTHUR I’m sorry. I just filled it.

20 CONTINUED: 20

15. 26 CONTINUED: 26

27 EXT. VICTORIA‘S PLACE - DAY 27

BEN No big deal.

ARTHUR Yeah you’re right.

Arthur walks into the kitchen

ARTHUR (continuing) You know Ben, I don’t see why we can’t go see an attorney here in California and get married here. Why do we have to go all the way out to Vermont.

BEN Okay. I know a great lawyer in Beverly Hills. We can give him a call.

FADE OUT:

FADE IN:

30 INT. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE - NEXT DAY 30

They are sitting at the desk.

ATTORNEY I’ll see what I can do to help you guys out. (MORE)

20.

30 CONTINUED: 30

ATTORNEY (CONT’D) But getting married out here in California is going to be hard because of this Proposition twenty two, and I’m gonna have to read up on the law more. So it may be in your best interests to go to Vermont to get married. Come back here to California and if for any reason California doesn’t recognize your license from Vermont, then we’re gonna have to fight the full faith and creditability clause.

BEN So we go to Vermont to get our civil union license, if the state rejects to recognize it then it goes to the US Supreme Court?

ATTORNEY That’s right.

BEN That’s gonna cost a lot of money. We can’t afford that.

ATTORNEY I have friends at the ACLU that fund political issues such as this one. So don’t worry. Everything’s gonna be fine.

31 EXT. AIRPORT - VERMONT - MORNING 31

Ben and Arthur arrive in the airplane to get married.

32 OMITTED 32

Do you take thee to be your wedded partner to have and to hold till death do you part.

ARTHUR I do.

PRIEST

(to Ben)

And do you take thee to be your wedded partner till death do you part.

BEN I do.

PRIEST May I have the rings.

Ben and Arthur try to find the rings and then realize they forgot them.

BEN I don’t have the rings. Do you have the rings?

ARTHUR No. No. I don’t have the rings.

PRIEST May I please have the rings?

BEN Uh. I don’t have the rings! Can we do this without the rings?

ARTHUR Could we?

PRIEST Yes. We can do without. The most important thing to remember is that you love and accept each other... (MORE)

22. 33 CONTINUED: 33

PRIEST (CONT’D) ...with unconditional love of God that He wants you to have for each other. (beat) Now I pronounce you bonded in love for life. (beat) You may kiss.

Ben and Arthur feel victory yet Arthur feels doubts.

BEN Bub I’m so happy. We did it. We’re married.

Ben kisses Arthur.

ARTHUR I’m happy too, Ben.

BEN You don’t look happy. What’s going on?

ARTHUR Well, it just doesn’t feel like we’re married you know. It’s like... we’re in Vermont so it’s recognized here but you know when we go back to BEN California it’s not going to Arthur! Shhhh! be recognized and it doesn’t feel like we’re married.

BEN We’ll take care of all that shit when we get back to California. Let’s just enjoy it. Enjoy it. We’ve got three more days here. We’ve dinner plans tonight.

23. 34 CONTINUED: 34

ARTHUR Okay.

BEN Alright. We are married. You know. We ARE married.

35 EXT. THE AIRPORT - EVENING 35

Ben and Arthur leave Vermont to head back to Los Angeles.

36 INT. ATTORNEY’S CONFERENCE ROOM - NEXT DAY 36

ATTORNEY Look. I have some good news. Getting your license recognized out here in California may not be a big legal battle.

(pulling out papers)

According to this legal document that I have here it states that the Proposition twenty two is only a marriage between a man and a woman and that will be recognized by California however what you two have is not a marriage but a civil union which non the less is equivalent to that of a marriage. You still bare the rights that married couples do. So the civil union license that you have from Vermont must be recognized here in California

ARTHUR So if it’s law here why do we have to go to court?

ATTORNEY Because it’s all a matter of values and principles and all gays deserve the same rights as anyone else.

37 INT. VICTOR’S PLACE - NIGHT 37

VICTOR (on the phone) Yeah Arthur, hi this is Victor, your brother.

ARTHUR Hey Ben.

BEN What. What’s up?

ARTHUR Look at this.

Ben takes it from Arthur.

FATHER RABIN Mr. Sailes.

VICTOR Father, they told me you wanted to see me about something.

FATHER RABIN I wanted to talk to you about something.

FATHER RABIN (continuing) Victor, I don’t know your brother. What he looks like, how he thinks, but everybody knows that your brother, Adam?

VICTOR Actually it’s Arthur.

FATHER RABIN Well...the congregation is concerned that your brother’s homosexuality may rub off onto their children and send their souls straight to hell.

VICTOR But Father, my brother hasn’t been to this church in ten years. (beat) What does it have to do with me?

FATHER RABIN It has to do with the fact that members of the congregation don’t want the brother of a gay man in here. Their afraid you may hold some sort of karma or deep seeded evil energy, and well...quite frankly, I’m going to have to ask you to stop offering your services to this church.

46. 76 CONTINUED: 76

VICTOR How dare you! I’ve given over ten thousand dollars to this church. It’s just much a part of my heart as it is for yours father!

FATHER RABIN No! You gave that money freely out of good Christian love. You can not buy your way into heaven and you can not buy yourself a place in this church. Victor your brother is a demon. And we do not want the relative of a man who defies and desecrates God’s Holy word here. Now leave here at once.

VICTOR Father! But Father please!

Victor throws one more item on the floor. He is outraged.

79 INT. STAN’S PLACE - LATER - NIGHT 79

Victor enters.

VICTOR Stan!

STAN You okay?

VICTOR No. I mean, I will be. I’ve gotta be accepted by the church. Can you believe I got thrown out? Look I’m a good Christian.

STAN Look. I’ll talk to him first thing in the morning. I’m sure there’s something we can do.

VICTOR The poison didn’t work. Or the potion. Did it?

STAN What is it between you and your brother! I mean...gee.

VICTOR I’m gonna kill him! I am going to kill my brother. I’m gonna shoot him!

48. 79 CONTINUED: 79

STAN Isn’t that a little extreme. You could go to prison for that!

VICTOR God is my witness and God will save me!

STAN You won’t be able to go to church in prison.

VICTOR Yes I can!

STAN Look I’m not into him being gay either but I don’t think that’s the solution.

Someone knocks on his door.

49. 80 CONTINUED: 80

FATHER RABIN (sounding very nice) Yes who is it?

VICTOR It’s Victor Sailes.

FATHER RABIN (softer voice so he can’t hear him) Well Victor what brings you in today?

VICTOR I’d like to talk to you for a moment. It concerns my brother’s salvation. I take it you spoken to Stan.

FATHER RABIN Yes I have.

VICTOR How is my standing with this church?

FATHER RABIN Victor, your brother is still gay.

VICTOR Has Stan talked to you and told you that I’m willing to do anything, even the final deed, to get accepted back into the church.

FATHER RABIN Yes...but what exactly did you mean by the final deed?

VICTOR Father, I don’t know exactly how to say this and still sound like a good Christian man, but I need you to help me to kill my brother to free him of the demons that possess his soul.

FATHER RABIN I see. You know, Martha Wellner?

50. 80 CONTINUED: 80

VICTOR Yes. What ever happened to her?

FATHER RABIN She got prosecuted for killing her son. Now she’s on death row.

VICTOR Yeah well I’m not afraid of the laws of mankind’s and the consequences I’ll face for killing my brother. It is more important for me to save my brother's soul for the sake of our great Lord Jesus Christ.

FATHER RABIN I understand. (beat) I know a man who can help you. I don’t think you should do this on your own.

He pulls out the man’s address.

FATHER RABIN Here’s his address. I’ll tell you what. I’ll talk to him and get back to you this evening.

VICTOR We can’t wait till this evening! I mean, Satan is laughing right now at these evil deeds. Something’s got to be done right now!

FATHER RABIN Hey hey. It took God seven days to create the world, I think that if I can get back to you this evening, that pretty well on my part. Things take time.

VICTOR Fine.

FATHER RABIN Good. Good.

ARTHUR So we have to leave right away?

53. 83 CONTINUED: 83

ARTHUR Well probably because you’re some crazy psychotic fuck!

VICTOR No, no. They threw me out of the church because of you’re my brother and because you’re gay. That’s why they threw me out.

ARTHUR Well you should probably find a church that knows the true meaning of love and understanding.

VICTOR I know what kind of little business you’re running.

ARTHUR Oh do you? Tell me. How did you find that out?

VICTORIA I hired a private investigator.

ARTHUR A what?

VICTORIA A private investigator. He told me that you’re running a porn shop. You know I can’t believe you.

VICTOR You know how they save souls don’t you Arthur? Huh? Do you know how? They baptize people. That’s what they do. We’re gonna baptize you. (with much force; and gun in hand) GET UP! GET UP! STOP! Stop right there! Take it off! In the Bible they baptize people naked. Naked in front of Jesus' eyes. Take it off now! Take it off!

Arthur slowly undresses, his mind spinning from the drug. Victor continues to point the gun at Arthur.

VICTOR (continuing) Do you accept Jesus as your Savior.

No answer from Arthur.

VICTOR (continuing) Answer me!

ARTHUR Yeah. I do.

VICTOR Turn around. Get in there! Get in there!

Victor forces Arthur to the bath tub.

117 INT. THE BATH ROOM - NIGHT 117

VICTOR Get down!

Arthur falls to the floor. Victor turns on the water.

VICTOR (continuing; forcing Arthur’s head under the running water) I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the son and the Holy Spirit. I baptize you!

Victor forces Arthur back up and into the bedroom with the gun forcefully at his back.

118 INT. THE BEDROOM - NIGHT 118

Victor knocks Arthur out again with the drug. He smacks Arthur around to be sure he’s out. He leaves the room.

Victor finds a seat and sits down.

120 INT. THE BEDROOM - NIGHT 120

Arthur slowly becomes conscious. He puts on his underwear and a shirt. He takes the gun out of a drawer in the bath room. He heads to the living room.

121 INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT 121

He enters the room and closes the door behind him.

ARTHUR Victor!

VICTOR Arthur!

Victor grabs for the gun. Arthur warns him.

ARTHUR Don’t!

Arthur is past the point of no return. He has at this point lost all human judgment. He is full of so much rage that is appears very calm. Revenge is the only thing on Arthur’s mind now.

ARTHUR (running his hand on his chest in side his robe) Is this what you want?

69. 121 CONTINUED: 121

VICTOR Arthur put some clothes on. You’re embarrassing yourself!

ARTHUR You can’t stand having Ben touch me. So you wanna touch me. You wanna fuck me don’t you Victor.

VICTOR Just drop the gun. Put the gun down. You’re going to hurt someone. Arthur, put it down.

ARTHUR Here I am. Come and get me!

He pulls the trigger. It hits a table and everything flies off. Victor is stunned. Smoke blazes out of the gun.

Arthur keeps advancing and getting closer to Victor offering some sex.

ARTHUR Come on Victor. You can fuck me. You know you can.

VICTOR Arthur, I know about the life insurance policy. It’s one million dollars.

Arthur reveals more of his body.

VICTOR (continuing) One million dollars because I killed Ben. But if you kill me, if you kill me now, you’re just gonna go to jail. You’re not gonna get a penny of that money. If you kill me, you’re gonna be condemned to death by our Lord Jesus Christ! DON’T DO IT!

Arthur fires the gun again, hitting Victor in the shoulder.

70. 121 CONTINUED: 121

ARTHUR Come on, Victor. Come here and fuck me now before it’s too late.

Victor realizes there’s no talking to Arthur. He takes a chance and grabs the gun. He shoots it at Arthur, hitting him in the shoulder.

Arthur flies to the ground, over the chair. Victor keeps firing the gun, again, again, and again till he’s out of bullets. Arthur sits there on the chair with rivers of blood streaming out of his mouth. The blood slowly fills his lungs.

Arthur reaches for his gun, barely with enough energy to pull the trigger. He turns around and pulls the trigger, a luck shot hitting Victor in the fore head. Victor stumbles backwards, hitting the wall. A moment goes by that Victor is up against the wall. He falls to the floor dead before hitting it.

Arthur falls to the ground dead.
