You'll learn about creating and adjusting materials and mapping to design how the neighborhood looks, and use XRef objects to add street lamps and some trees. You'll use vertex lighting and vertex paint to prepare your model for export.

If you are a games professional, this tutorial should get you up to speed on 3ds max 4 pretty quickly.

Upgrade Tutorials

We've designed a few tutorials to quickly show off some of the new features in 3ds max 4. In the Upgrade tutorials, you will find tutorials covering a tour of the new UI, new modeling features, constraints, custom attributes, and rendering improvements.

Of course, you will find new features throughout all the tutorials. Be sure to look at bones setup, IK setup, and animation tutorials, to learn about the new plug-in inverse kinematic solver system.

There is also a fantastic web site that illustrates some of the 3ds max 4 new features at http://www2.discreet.com/animation/features.html. Click New Features at the left of the page. The MPG files can be pretty big, so don't try to play them directly over the Internet. Download them to your hard drive. To download, right-click the movie name, and choose Save Target As, then give an appropriate path.

If You've Never Used a 3D Program Before

Maybe you are new to the whole idea of creating 3D models and animation on the computer. If so, read the Getting Started with 3ds max section of the 3ds max 4 User Reference. You can read it online, by choosing User Reference from the Help menu. You can also step away from your computer and read the printed User Reference.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the concepts of 3D modeling and animation, then move on to the introductory tutorials. These will introduce you to the basic concepts of working in 3D and using the program. After that, try some of the other tutorials appropriate to your interests.

If You Are Skilled in Another 3D Program

Read the Getting Started with 3ds max section of the 3ds max 4 User Reference. This section discusses the concepts of 3D modeling and animation, and shows you how the software puts these concepts to use. Work through the introductory tutorials to get the feel of how 3ds max 4 is used to complete various 3D tasks. Then move on to the Professional tutorials appropriate to your interests.

If You Are Upgrading from an Earlier Version of 3ds max

Read What's New in 3ds max 4 in the User Reference. Then do the Upgrade Tutorials, as well as the Professional tutorials appropriate to your interests.

Finding the Files to Do the Tutorials

You'll find the files for the tutorials on the 3ds max 4 Learning and Training CD, the second CD that ships with the software. Go to the \tutorials directory and then to the appropriate subdirectory below that. All the MAX scene files, bitmap textures, and scripts needed to do the tutorial are kept in one folder. You can copy the entire directory to your own local hard drive (you might make a 3dsmax4\tutorials directory) or run the files directly from the CD. When you have finished, you can delete the entire \tutorials directory to reclaim all that disk space.
