Ghost Recon Mapping In 3D Studio Max
Tutorial: The Basics
| Adding Mapping and Materials for the Building |
In this tutorial, you will rapidly build a level with some boxes for buildings. You'll learn about creating and adjusting materials and mapping to design how the neighborhood looks, and use XRef objects to add street lamps and some trees. You'll use vertex lighting and vertex paint to prepare your model for export.
If you are a games professional, this tutorial should get you up to speed on 3ds max 4 pretty quickly.
The files for this tutorial are on the Learning and Training CD in the \tutorials\level_design directory.

If you are a games professional, you'll want to do the level design tutorials and the spaceship tutorials.
Character Modeling and Animation
If you want to create characters, you should look at the character modeling and animation tutorials. There are tutorials for character modeling using three different construction methods
Low-Polygon Character Modeling
Modeling the Head of a NURBS Character
Patch Character Modeling
For character animation, you'll explore setting up Bones and IK.
You'll learn to animate a walk cycle using a basic IK setup.
For facial animation you'll make a character talk, lip-syncing using the Morpher Modifier.
You'll also do lip sync using FFD deformers.
You'll learn to create a realistic skin shader and map a character's head as well.
Effects Animation
If you are a special effects animator, complete the Effects tutorials. In these productions you will create an exploding asteroid,
Among other things, particle systems effects can model smoke, water, exploding hardware, and underwater bubbles.
Broadcast/Web Design
If you are designing for broadcast, post or Internet delivery, the flying logo tutorial introduces you to working with text, volume light effects and atmospherics.
There are also tutorials here for camera effects such as camera matching, camera mapping, and camera tracking
We've designed a few tutorials to quickly show off some of the new features in 3ds max 4. In the Upgrade tutorials, you will find tutorials covering a tour of the new UI, new modeling features, constraints, custom attributes, and rendering improvements.
Of course, you will find new features throughout all the tutorials. Be sure to look at bones setup, IK setup, and animation tutorials, to learn about the new plug-in inverse kinematic solver system.
There is also a fantastic web site that illustrates some of the 3ds max 4 new features at http://www2.discreet.com/animation/features.html. Click New Features at the left of the page. The MPG files can be pretty big, so don't try to play them directly over the Internet. Download them to your hard drive. To download, right-click the movie name, and choose Save Target As, then give an appropriate path.

3ds max User Reference: Besides the tutorials found in this Tutorials collection, you will also learn about 3ds max 4 from the User Reference, either printed or online. It has more detailed information about using the features found in the software to create various kinds of models and animation. You'll find the online Reference in the Help menu within 3ds max.
Procedures: Additionally, you can look in the User Reference for any individual subject and find procedures that quickly tell you how to use a command or option to perform basic tasks.
Also check the online User Reference if you did not find what you needed in the printed version. There may be last-minute additions found only online.
Other Resources: There is a wealth of information written about using 3ds max. There are third-party books that specialize in teaching 3ds max for various industries. There are magazines devoted to 3D design and animation, as well as user groups and mail lists. Communities of users trade secrets daily, and if you ask a question, you're likely to get answers from around the world.

Maybe you are new to the whole idea of creating 3D models and animation on the computer. If so, read the Getting Started with 3ds max section of the 3ds max 4 User Reference. You can read it online, by choosing User Reference from the Help menu. You can also step away from your computer and read the printed User Reference.
Once you have familiarized yourself with the concepts of 3D modeling and animation, then move on to the introductory tutorials. These will introduce you to the basic concepts of working in 3D and using the program. After that, try some of the other tutorials appropriate to your interests.

You'll find the files for the tutorials on the 3ds max 4 Learning and Training CD, the second CD that ships with the software. Go to the \tutorials directory and then to the appropriate subdirectory below that. All the MAX scene files, bitmap textures, and scripts needed to do the tutorial are kept in one folder. You can copy the entire directory to your own local hard drive (you might make a 3dsmax4\tutorials directory) or run the files directly from the CD. When you have finished, you can delete the entire \tutorials directory to reclaim all that disk space.
There are five introductory tutorials that provide a solid overview of 3ds max 4.
First, you'll be shown how to create an animated still life.
Next, you'll will model a Ping-Pong table, net, and ball, and then animate a Ping-Pong ball bouncing across a Ping-Pong table.
These three tutorials will introduce you to the basics of modeling and animation. You'll cover a lot of ground quickly; it's a bit of a crash course.
The next two tutorials provide a broad base of knowledge about materials and lighting.
In the materials and mapping tutorial, you'll learn how many of the materials in the still life scene were created.
In the lighting tutorial, you'll create the illusion of light passing through a glass ball.
To further introduce you to modeling, you can model the components for a space production. You will build a planet with moons, create an asteroid, and model a spaceship.
In another modeling tutorial. you'll
