ALFA 156

ENGINE

3.2 V6 24V. An exciting engine. Sportiness also evolves in performance. An even more powerful and flexible solution for the two new GTAs. The engine is brand new, and derives from the now classic three litre V6 24 valve unit fitted to top-of-the-range Alfa 166 and Gtv versions. A vigorous and, above all, "well-rounded" power unit. As you would expect from a six cylinder unit. Engine capacity is 3179 cm3; V6, 24 valves and 250bhp. With maximum power output at 6200 rpm. The peak torque is greater: 30.6 kg at 4800 rpm, with a torque curve reaching high values even at tow running speeds. The crankshaft stroke has been lengthened to 78 mm. Power is increased, as is the strength of the connecting rod and pistons on the engine block, the gears and the clutch. The intake and exhaust ports have been given a new timing pattern, to deliver torque at low speeds. There is a new system for cooling the engine oil with a separate radiator, to keep performance constant. The hydraulic steering pump is new. A vigorous engine that can be fully exploited at all speeds. Elasticity enabling the car totravel In sixth gear at less than 2000 rpm and give a spurt of acceleration without changing gear. Extremely satisfying behaviour even during daily use. Unique sensations that only a racing car can offer. And all in maximum safety.

Through innovation and leading edge design Alfa Romeo continue to set new standards in the reduction of fuel consumption without compromising performance. Thanks to lean burn technology, this aim has been achieved with the 165bhp 2.0 JTS engine, it is the first petrol engine with injectors which work directly in the combustion chamber. This is based on a totally unique interpretation of the combustion process, which enhances power and does not require the use of sulphur-free petrol. The 2.0 JTS in the Alfa 156 functions on lean burn technology up to around 1500 rpm, saving on fuel. Above this level it burns a stoichiometric air-fuel mixture, at a normal ratio of 14.7:1 between the two components. In this way performance is better than with a normal indirect injection engine, and this is further enhanced by the new gears. The Alfa 156 fitted with the new 2.0 JTS reaches a top speed of 137 mph (on the track), and goes from 0 to 62 mph in just 8.2 seconds. There are many innovative features: the cylinder heads with Bosch injectors mounted in the chamber, the pistons, the camshafts and the exhaust system. As well as the high performance intake shafts, the high pressure Common Rail petrol manifold, the higher compression ratio, and the cascade exhaust system, composed of two main catalytic converters built into the manifold. In addition to a manual gearbox, Q-, the Selespeed gearbox is also available. Derived from gear systems used in F1, Selespeed provides a sequential 5-speed gearbox actionable without taking your hands off the steering wheel, bringing advantages to the control and driving pleasure of the car.
