Brand Reputation
Vertical Doors, Inc. (VDI)
VDI invented the lambo doors conversion kit. Simple installation for the widest variety of models.
LSD
Highest quality, highest price. German made. Good selection of simple bolt-ons for European cars.
Crash-tested.
WingDoors
Refinement of GT Factory, developed by former GT Factory designer.
Much less expensive than VDI or LSD; better fit, more reversible, and more door travel than GT Factory.
AutoLoc
Widest rotation angle (130 degrees). Reasonably priced.
GT Factory
Least expensive of the major brands.
How much modification is required?
The "bolt-on" kits -- that means VDI and LSD -- require very little modification. To install, you remove the fender
to reveal the "inner fender," which is sheet metal hidden behind the visible fender. Most bolt-on installations require
cutting a small hole in this invisible location, typically about 3 by 3 inches, to leave clearance for the lambo hinge to
operate. These installations are reversible, because you can put the factory hinge back in and leave no
externally visible trace that the car was ever modified.
The "universal" kits -- that means any kit designed to be
adapted to more than one type of vehicle, and includes all kits not described above as "simple bolt on" -- require additional
drilling and cutting of the hinge flange, door frame and/or inner fender. These installations are cheaper to buy and
install, but harder to reverse, because they may leave visible traces of the installation along the door frame.
Also, obviously,
a welded installation, such as GT Factory, is harder to remove than a bolted one.
Vertical and horizontal action
The less expensive lambo door conversion kits only open up (vertically).
The more expensive ones (VDI and LSD) open both horizontally (like a regular car door) and vertically.
This can be useful in situations like low garages, or on those rare cases when you don't want to attract attention!
Also, doors that open out BOTH horizontally and vertically are easier to enter and exit than vertical-only doors,
even ones with very long travel, such as the 130-degree AutoLoc doors.
