I know I know. It took me a real long time to write this stupid review, but it doesn’t matter anyway. The flick bombed, and is already going by the wayside. And I’m sorry to say, the flick had it coming. As with most of my more negative reviews (and my late ones), I’ll make this a little more brief than usual.
In a nutshell, this film could have been a really incredible, thought-provoking sci-fi film… if it had a different director. Now, this is coming from a fan of Michael Bay. I really dig Armageddon and the Bad Boys movies. But this film just had so much potential, and the “Michael Bay-isms” just did not fit. The first 40 minutes or so were really engaging. The performances of Mcgregor and Johansson were the top-notch ones we’ve come to expect from those two performers. The sets and overall atmosphere were truly spectacular, and the story had a great modern resonance.
Unfortunately, Michael Bay took over, and started throwing countless POINTLESS car chases, explosions, and just utterly ridiculous stunt sequences that would make the biggest of action fans cringe. There was just no place for falling through a giant building logo, only to miraculously survive by landing on some random netting… Bah…
It’s a shame, because I really want to like this film a lot. Heck, I’m still giving it a 6.5 because the beginning and end were rather good, and as I said the performances, settings, and special effects were all top-notch. In the hands of another director, this just might have been a classic… But now we’ll never know.
