Wow. I really have no clue what I just watched, but it was really awesome. I read a quote from a critic on the back of the packaging which really kind of sums up the feeling you get after watching this film: "Punch-Drunk Love leaves you addled, a little dizzy, and overcome by a pleasing, unplaceable sensation." For those who don't know, this is a Paul Thomas Anderson movie (writer director of Boogie Nights and Magnolia) starring Adam Sandlar and Emily Watson. This is the first film I've ever seen Sandlar actually "act" in. He is truly talented, far beyond his comedic genius.
In this film he plays a depressed, rage-filled, socially impaired small-business owner with seven sisters. The main theme of the movie seems to be the idea that there truly is someone for everyone. No matter what your personality is: your behaviors, habits, etc., there is still hope. You can find that one person who loves you not regardless of those things, but even because of them. I found myself connecting with this film on a somewhat personal level in that those of you who know me know that I could be considered a weird guy. I'm a comic book geek, a movie geek, a music geek. I write and talk about weird things (just look at The Stick in my previous entry), and more. And yet I still have this wonderful person in my life who continues to love me and make me happier that I've ever been before. So in a nutshell. All of you out there a little down on yourself and lacking a little hope in the love department, you should check out this movie. Word.
