Moulin Rouge!

Here's a flick I've wanted to see for a real long time and just never got around to it, but DAMN was this a good movie. It was absolutely everything I was hoping it would be and more, while at the same time completely different from all of my expectations. To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect, but from the very beginning Baz Luhrmann's frenetic and flashy style drew me right in. The colors are ridiculous, the camera movement is non-stop, the cinematography is enchanting and unique, and Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman give absolutely wonderful performances. And the message of the movie, a message as simple as the power of love, was executed so well that the simplicity of it made it that more magical, and served as a great reminder of just how powerful and important true love is.

Also it was so much fun to recognize so many fairly modern songs in such a not modern setting, but I was especially excited to hear "The Show Must Go On," one of my favorite Queen songs. Really just a fantastic, and really fun movie. Definitely have a strong desire to check out Romeo & Juliet now, Baz Luhrmann's previous film, shot in a similar style.

After watching the movie I came over to the comp and checked out some info on the flick, and I came across Roger Ebert's review of the movie at the time of its release, and his last paragraph just really nailed this flick: "The movie is all color and music, sound and motion, kinetic energy, broad strokes, operatic excess. While it might be most convenient to see it from the beginning, it hardly makes any difference; walk in at any moment and you'll quickly know who is good and bad, who is in love and why--and then all the rest is song, dance, spectacular production numbers, protestations of love, exhalations of regret, vows of revenge and grand destructive gestures. It's like being trapped on an elevator with the circus."

Definitely give this one a shot.
