Kicking & Screaming

This movie just wasn’t as good as it should have been. Make no mistake, Will Farrell is absolutely hilarious and the flick is worth at least one viewing, but the problem in the fact that he just wasn’t central enough to the story, even though the story was about him. Primarily, I blame this on the character of Mike Ditka. Ditka is not an actor, and though he tries hard here, he is really just painful to watch on screen. To make matters worse, he is on the screen a lot; way too much. They tried to make his character a sort of hard-ass mentor for Farrell, but Ditka just wasn’t funny at all. The only times I laughed when he was on screen was when Farrell was imitating his phrases and clothes.

In terms of the story it was classic Disney, clichéd, predictable tripe featuring the downtrodden coach seeking redemption in the eyes of his father by bringing the worst team in the league to the top of the heap. What makes everything watchable and enjoyable is Farrell’s classic lines and delivery style. The best part of the movie is his subplot involving his growing addiction to the monster that is coffee, but that doesn’t even have anything to do with the actual plot.

So in the name of keeping this review short, as it’s about a film that there really isn’t much to talk about, I certainly give it a recommendation simply if you’re a fan of Will Farrell or if you have kids who are into these kinds of films; just don’t expect it to become your favorite Farrell movie. Go pick up Anchorman, Elf, or Old School instead and let’s keep our fingers crossed for the upcoming Bewitched.
