MOVIE AND CD OF THE MONTH: March 2005!!!

Movie of the Month: The Jacket
I really wanted to catch this flick a second time, but by the time I had chance to it was only playing at one time, super late at all of my local theaters. Then, West Boylston (a cheap theater which picks up movies when they leave the main cinemas) never even got it. So I got screwed. Anyway, the competition came this month from a disappointing Be Cool, a fun but standard Robots, and an as-yet-unreviewed gem Upside of Anger. Really, it was between this or Upside, which you'll see from my forthcoming review was a great flick. With The Jacket, it was the combination of great acting, an orginal storying, and thought-provoking concepts which made it stick with me. As I said in my review, any film that refuses to leave your brain for hours after you leave the theater is a sign of good things. Having never seen a movie starring Adrien Brody before, this one finally gave me reassurance that he was a great choice for the new King Kong movie, and Keira Knightley reconfirmed my interest in her career. Be sure to check out my full review.

CD of the Month: James Labrie's Elements of Persuasion
It was between this or the new Mars Volta album, Frances the Mute, and let me tell you it was a pretty tough choice. I was extremely pleased with both releases, as they both showed a great change in form and maturity from both artists. As a whole, Frances the Mute is probably the more technically "better" album. The new textures and overall variety in the compositions while still maintaining unified arrangements was vastly superior here than on their chaotic debut. But what it comes down to is which do I enjoy more, and that would be James' CD. The heavier direction he took really works, though he still manages to keep the overall tone of a mullmuzzler album, as he has stuck with his writing partner Matt Guillery. Lots of killer riffs, fun vocal lines, and outstanding production. This one will get some mileage.
