MOVIE AND CD OF THE MONTH: JUNE 2005!!!

Movie of the Month: Batman Begins
This film is without a doubt the movie of the month, and I'm having a very difficult time deciding where it ranks against Revenge of the Sith on my yearly ranking, but I was pleased that June was such a great month for movies. Cinderella Man is an incredible flick which I highly recommend, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was the perfect film for a teen girl (which is me?), and Bewitched was flat-out hilarious. Sadly, I only saw these four films out of the seven I wanted to catch during the month. I just never got around to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and then Heights and My Summer of Love (as predicted) just haven't been released anywhere closer to me than Boston. Oh well. Batman more than made up for that. One other item of note. In the making of this post, I realized that the movie of the month for June last year was Spider-man 2. Is June comic-book month? I think Superman comes out in June next year. Hopefully it will be good enough to continue the trend...

CD of the Month: Dream Theater's Octavarium
I already raved about this disc a couple weeks ago, but I'm happy to say it continues to grow. Almost a month later, I'm still picking up on new details that make my head spin. The neat things is when this is still happening at this point, the details are usually the subtle things which are cool but somewhat insignificant to the casual listener. Conversely, on this disc I'm still picking up on significant motifs, passages, melodies, and progressions which open up whole new realms of appreciation for everything the band accomplished with this disc. Now, in my humble opinion, Images & Words will always be DT's masterpiece, but I do believe Octavarium will unseat Awake from its status as "second best" which it has held since I first got into the band eight years ago. Other discs I picked up were Coldplay's X&Y, Shadow Gallery's Room V, and Shakira's Fijacion Oral Vo. 1. X&Y is a fantastic album from front to back. Coldplay just doesn't write bad songs, and while there isn't a whole lot new for them here they did quite a few new things to embellish their style and keep things fresh. Room V was a nice return to form after the lackluster Legacy, but as a sequel to Tyranny it's just not as good. And finally, I just love Shakira's voice and it sounds especially good when she's singing in her native tongue. Also, I think she's a pretty good songwriter. And that's that.
