MOVIE AND CD OF THE MONTH: JANUARY 2005!!!

January Movie of the Month: In Good Company
Considering the only competition for this title was the mess which it known as Elektra, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise. What's nice, however, is that I'm not sure there are many flicks in the coming months which would have been able to top this one. It really surpassed my expectations. To think that they guy responsible for American Pie had a movie of this depth in him is quite remarkable. Touching on everything from Father/Daughter relationships, corporate take-over, boss/employee relationships, happiness, finding meaning in your life (be it in career, family, or anything else), and much more. Can't wait to see where Topher Grace goes from here. That kid's got some serious chops.

January CD of the Month: Spock's Beard's Octane
This disc is a gigantic leap forward from Feel Euphoria. It seems like the guys are finally starting to find their identity in a post-Neal Morse world. Songs such as "The Planet's Hum" and "There Was a Time" are already among my favorites that they Beard have produced on any of their albums. In terms of melody and inventiveness, these guys are doing stuff that would never have been found on a Beard record before Neal left. The one thing I wish they'd do is just let go of their attempts at an epic. Feel Euphoria's "A Guy Named Sid" and now "A Flash Before My Eyes" just pale in comparison to Neal genius when it comes to long-form songs. These newer attempts are much more like tiny concept albums full of potential, but ultimately undeveloped ideas. Hopefully with the next CD they'll really hone in more on tunes such as the two I already mentioned as well as NWC, and Watching the Tide. However, I must say that the "She is Everything" section of "A Flash" is truly beautiful and features the best guitar work/solo I've ever heard from Alan Morse. Check this disc out. It's a definitely grower, and very rewarding.
