Rodney Chalker's $5 Fan Mod

I did my fan mod according to the instructions on Rodney Chalker's Site. I borrowed many of the pictures and wordage from his site. While I will attempt to provide any and all info that I have, any in-depth technical questions should be sent his direction, as he is FAR more knowledgeable about this mod than I am.

Steps

1. First, we have to get the switch ready. You will have to solder a jumper wire from pins 1 to 4. Also, you must solder the diode from pins 3 to 5. Lastly, you must solder a wire to pin 2 for ground, a wire to pin 3, and a wire to pin 1. (See pictures)

2. Next, we are going to run the 2 wires through a grommet in the firewall. There is one above the steering column that is extremely convenient for this.

3. Once the wires are through the firewall, route them along the firewall to the fuse box on the passenger side strut tower. Run the wires to the fuses as shown here:

4. All that is left is to mount the switch in the desired location. I mounted mine similar to the way it is displayed on Rodney Chalker's site. Here is the switch before it was mounted.

Caution!

I must let everyone know the possible downsides of this mod. For one, you WILL set a DTC or two. Also, there is a very good chance that you may stretch out the terminal clip inside the relay box and prevent a good connection should you ever decide to remove this mod. For those that are concerned about this, I highly suggest the Casper's Electronics Hi-Speed Fan Switch. This provides a completely plug and play alternative.
If you happen to have already stretched out your terminal plugs, one possible alternative is to slightly twist the terminals on the relay, as this may provide enough contact area to correct the problem.
