Chapter 89

The following morning Sarah was up bright and early despite the late hours she had kept the night before. She had made a pot of coffee before heading out to the pool area where she planned to call and talk to Kristina once she was settled in.

"Hello?"

"Hey, it’s me" she said as she took a sip of the fresh brewed latte.

Kristina’s voice was hoarse and she sounded as if she were still deep in sleep as she began to talk to Sarah. "You okay? What time is it?"

"I don’t know, I think around six" she laughed. "What time did you and Howie go to bed?"

Groaning, Kristina wiped her eyes and then examined her hands. "Late! TOO late for me to be up right now, for sure."

Sarah laughed outright. "You never were a morning person, Kris."

"I know and I’m still NOT a morning person. Now, what’s wrong?"

As Howie rolled over and began kissing Kristina’s neck, his hand gliding along the gentle curve of her hip, she simply winked at him and got out of bed, leaving him to sigh heavily and pull her pillow over his head in frustration.

"Nothing’s wrong, Kris. I just wanted to see what you were doing, that’s all."

Trying not to laugh at her fiancée, Kristina turned her attention back to her friend on the other line. The friend that was lying her ass off to cover up her true emotions. "Bullshit, Sarah! It’s me and I know something is wrong. Now, spill it!"

"BITCH!"

"You know it!" Kristina laughed.

Rolling her eyes, Sarah told Kristina all that had happened the previous night and how Alex had told her that he was falling in love with her.

"Oh My God!" Kristina squealed in delight. "What did you say?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing? Are you crazy?"

"About him" Sarah replied quietly.

"Then tell him, Sarah. He’s a great guy."

"I know he is, but, I’m scared."

"Of what?"

"Getting hurt again."

Kristina sat quietly, her silence confusing Sarah and making her even more nervous than she already was.

"Kris, you still there?"

"I’m here" she replied. "Just thinking."

"Care to share your thoughts?"

"Sarah" Kristina began, running her hand through her tangled mass of blonde waves. "Alex doesn’t share his feelings easily. He’s been hurt pretty bad in the past too and sometimes he’s very guarded with his emotions. If he admitted to you that he’s falling in love with you, then he’s very sincere about it."

"I should have listened to you long ago, Kris, when you kept telling me that Alex and I were perfect for each other" Sarah replied.

"But you wouldn’t listen to me" Kris smirked. "You were hung up on ......"

"The stuffed shirt" they chorused, bursting into a fit of much needed laughter.

After a few minutes of sporadic giggles, Kristina asked, "So, what are you gonna do now?"

"I’m gonna tell him that I feel the same way" Sarah said as she stood and began to make her way back into the house. "Thanks for listening, Kris."

"No problem, sis. See you later at the airport?"

"Definitely. Bye!"

"Bye!" Kristina said with a smile as she hung up the phone and went to satisfy her husband-to-be.
