CHUAN FA is a martial arts system of self defense, traditional training, health and exercise designed to offer a student a training regime without the fear of being hurt. Chuan Fa is not a system of sport designed for play nor is it a system that utilizes strength and agression. It is a system designed for self defense and is an art therefore that can be practiced by both men and women of various ages.

In addition the knowledge inherited by Indian monks who had originally been members of the Ksatreya (warrior) caste concerning their traditional unarmed fighting art known as Vajramushti (or Vajramukti) in general, considers its own actual Chuan Fa movements to have also evolved out of the dynamic practice of the various mudras (ritual hand signs) associated with the representation of the qualities of Buddhas and it is possible that the defensive implications of many of these could have been realised during the practice and application of the movement meditations of Kayagatasati

Such Mudra when performed in the face of an attack could serve as effective defensive mechanisms by diverting blows aimed at ones body. Defensive techniques of this type were considered as an instrumental skilful means which permitted a monk, through his remaining inwardly calm, to avert the development of future sufferings by their wrongdoers and to protect those that they attacked.

As such sequences rely upon circular movement many of the ways in they are performed ensure that the intensity of an attack is turned away from its intended victim and instead unsettles or returns it towards the person who has initiated it. The harder and faster an aggressive movement so equally is it returned to its owner. Such methods are seen as a form of ‘instant karma’ for their perpetrator who it is hoped will then realise the error of their ways.

The movements which constitute such protective manoeuvres are technically called ‘receivings’ rather than ‘blocks’ and demonstrate the defensive nature of the art . It is considered very important in Chuan Fa that throughout such techniques their practitioner remains completely calm and compassionate in thought and that their attitude remains palliative not punitive in nature.

The arising of even the smallest amount of ill will or anger would however totally nullify the neutrality of the defenders karmic liability.

The Shaolin Chuan Fa Association is responsible for providing students with rank testing and promotion in the region and for certifying instructors to teach Chuan Fa. In addition to the instructional certifications, the association also provides Executive Self Defense Training, Corporate Self Awareness and Self Defense Training,Tai Chi, Kenpo and Jiu Jitsu Seminars, Close Quarter Comabat Training for military and law enforcement personnel, womens self defense programs and Kayaka Qi/Kiatsu Healing Certification.
