WOMBLES NETBALL CLUB

Netball in Putney/Wimbledon/Clapham

Thanks for your interest in our club.
I haven't played netball for years, but having enjoyed playing competitively at school, I have since been looking for somewhere to play. Unfortunately, there are very few teams operating in the area, and so I have decided to set my own team up. The club is still in embryonic stages: there is a lot of work still to be done, and if anybody would like to help me with getting it started you would be very welcome to do so via the Club Committee. Finding a venue is proving to be very difficult, however, there are so many people interested that I am determined to find somewhere so we can start playing soon.

Meeting Info!

We will be holding the first club meeting on Thursday 27th February 2003. If you would like to attend the meeting, please email me at the address below for time and place. It will be a very informal meeting, although we will be deciding important matters such as:
  • When, where and how often we train
  • Team Colours
  • the running of the club via the Club Committee
Information on the Committee posts, and the responsibilities each one has, can be found here
An agenda for the meeting can be found here

Below are some frequently asked questions about the club. If after reading you are still interested in joining us, and cannot attend the meeting on 27th Feb, please email me with the following information:

  • Which area you live in, and if there is any area in SW London to which you would not be willing to travel to play.
  • Your previous netballing experience - just a rough indication of your level will do - ie. school/college/club/county
  • Which position/s you play
  • Which days of the week you would be available for training, and if you would be willing to train at weekends
Once the meeting has passed, I will then email you to let you know when the first training session will be. Hope to hear from you soon!
What standard of players are you looking for?

We are looking for all standards of players. People interested so far include those who haven't played for years and just want to play socially, in addition to more experienced county players. Once the club is established we will put people in teams according to ability to make sure everyone is playing at the correct level, and against people who match their own ability.

I'm not sure I want to join a team. Can I just play for fun?

Sure! The main reason I am setting the club up is to have fun, meet new people and get fit at the same time.

I want to play competitively - will the club be fielding teams in leagues/tournaments etc.?

I am currently in the process of finding out about local leagues which we could join. I am hoping that we can eventually field several teams in various leagues and tournaments.

Can I join on my own or do I need to bring a team?

We are not a league or tournament, so feel free to join alone.>

Where and when is training?

We are currently in the process of trying to find somewhere to train. Many leisure centres are booked up for a while, so we may have to be nomadic whilst looking for a more permanent home later on. We are having a meeting to discuss when would be people's preferred time of training though in the next couple of weeks, please email me to be put on the mailing list for information on this meeting.

Will you be playing indoor or outdoor?

This depends on where we find to play. Judging by my conversations so far, it is more likely that it will be in a sports hall. Many netball courts will soon become tennis courts and no amount of love nor money will perusade those in charge to put the posts back up for us.

Is the club a ladies' only or mixed club?

Wombles Netball Club is a Ladies only club. This does not mean that we're trying to deliberately exclude men, it's a matter of practicalities. There are enough women who want to play netball at the moment to keep us busy. Once we're very well established and have access to a regular playing pad then we could consider it!

How much will it cost?

Again, this depends on where we can find to play. As an estimate, I would say about £2.50 each, perhaps more if we are able to hire two courts.
