Videogame Controller Design
My
Idea for the best videogame controller design would have the basic Gamecube
controller design, rubber grip with parts on the bottom that contour to the
average person's fingers. Longer handles. Where the Z button is there would be
another one on the other shoulder mirroring it. A button and X and Y buttons the
same design except another one shaped like the X and Y (the Z button) with the
three of them surrounding the A button leaving room for a slightly bigger, round
B button. The C stick would still be there but have more grip on top and be able
to be pushed in like the X-Box analogue buttons. The D Pad on the other side
would be bigger so you don't have a problem hitting more than one direction at
once and is easily accessible by the thumb. The Shoulder buttons would be moved
down slightly so the former Z buttons (Now R 1 & L1) are easier to reach
with the index finger. The analog R and L buttons would be R2 & L2 still
contouring to your finger but the top part wouldn't stick out as much, so you
could just slide your fingers up to hit the R1 & L1 buttons which would also
be designed like a wedge so you could access them just by moving your finger up
to them. Both buttons would be relatively close so it would take very little
effort to press them both by moving your index finger. Under the rest of the
controls on the handle where your middle finger or ring finger would be
(depending on how you hold it) would be another contour analog trigger button.
(Giving the feel of a gun) The hands could also be placed so that the ring
finger lines up with the trigger buttons L3 & R3 (or the T buttons), while
the middle fingers line up with L2 & R2 and the index fingers line up with
the L1 & R1 buttons. Of course there would be a built in rumble pack and the
option for cordless-ness. Oh and the Start button would be in the same place but
bigger so you could reach it with either hand and there would be a built in
Turbo Mode which you could set so that when you hold the button it changes the
signal so that it was as if you were pressing the button over and over faster
than humanly possible, and an Analog Turbo that would make all the Analog
buttons including the control sticks go up a whole level in speed. Example:
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind or whatever it is called has the worst way to get
through the game. You walk sooooo slow! So if you put turbo on and press the
control stick forward you would run super fast! (Of course the actual speed you
would go would depend on the game) and if the game wasn't made to support those
buttons then it wouldn't do anything. These two Turbo mode buttons would be
above and to the side of the Start/Pause button with the Analog Turbo closer to
the normal control stick and the Button Turbo would be closer to the buttons on
the right! (Not so close that you could hit them by accident and not so far away
that you can't easily reach them!) They would also be turned on with one press
and turned off with only one press. (I remember having problems with a PS
controller where you had to press the turbo button about 3 times to get
different modes of it and you could never turn it off whenever you wanted to.)
That, to me, brings together all the good parts of each controller!
For PS2 and X-BOX the buttons could be renamed or whatever but I think that is
the best design anyone could come up with so far.
How could my design be any better?
If I had a Cad program or some program like it, I would design it for you. But I
don't so you will just have to try to visualize it in your head like I do.
I really wish that Nintendo could have picked a cool color like that hot dark green that the XBOX has! I think a hot glowing cool orange color would be good! and for PS2 it could have that glowing bluish color their logo is made of! (These would be the colors I would pick to accent the outlines of the controllers all of which would go great with Black! The green would be like the green on the X Box. The hot orange would be like the clear plastic orange that Lego had for their Ice World Legos, and the blue would be, as I said before, the color of the PS2 symbol! They would all seem to glow in the light and would actually glow in the dark
