Beginning in 1970, the World Kendo Championships has been held once every 3 years. In 2003 the 12th World Kendo Championships took place in Glasgow Scotland. New Zealand was represented by an 11 person team. 6 members of this team came from the Rembuden Kendo Club - Gerard Egerton (player/coach,5th dan), Sachiyo Lee (women's captain,4th dan), Loreena Bradley (4th dan), Martin Lee (3rd dan), Marianna Leung (3rd dan), and Julia White (3rd dan). Sachiyo provided the highlight for New Zealand in being awarded a fighting spirit award for her performance at the Championships.
