Move Terms: Martial Art Tricks and Kicks

As complex as it may seem, the terminology for Martial Art Tricks and Kicks isn't that bad. The terminology isn't very strict or too proper like in other activites. Don't get so concerned with trying to get the lingo down as fast as you can, it'll eventually find it's way into your head. Just firmiliarize yourself with simple terms and move names. Well good luck with you trickbusting journey! Peace keep tricking!

General:

crash- when you totally mess up a move or don't land it

clean- term for moves that are smooth and dont have many flaws in them. The term "clean" isnt a prefix added to a move, but merely an adjective to describe the look of a move. When someone does a clean 540 its not a different move from a 540, but it a 540 where there isnt a stumble, the kick comes out nice, and an actual 540 degrees is spun. Cleanliness sometimes varies depending on the kick being performed. For example, with an easier technique like a 540, if you stumble a bit, it isnt really clean. But with a more advance technique, like a sideswipe, if you stumble just a bit, it may still be considered clean because of the difficulty factor. In Martial Art Kicks, cleanliness with moves are and should be important.

unclean/ ugly- the opposite of "clean". see above.

"Hook-...." - During a combo, or to get momentum for harder spinnins moves, throw a standing (no jump) spinning hook kick right before a move to get momentum. Doing a hook before some moves, makes them somewhat effortless. Also the correct term is Spin hook kick, but like other terms in tricks it is a term used so often

Variations - A different form of the move. Usually a variation of a move makes it harder.

Prefixes:

Cheat... - is a term for moves that are take off with one leg instead of two legs. For example a cheat 720 is a 720 with a one leg take off. You are not actually cheating during the move or taking away any of the effect, it just means that you are not getting the exact amount of rotation as listed. If you do a cheat 900, you are not doing the entire 900 degrees but are still facing front 2.5 times. Some "cheat" moves are more impressive to some than the regular moves without the "cheat" suffix. Now in days, "Cheat" moves are now being called "1-legged" moves. (i.e. cheat 720 = 1-legged 720) Does not usually apply to the Double Leg ( a double leg taking off with one foot is called a Double Leg 540, not a 1-leg Double Leg or a Cheat Double Leg)

1-leg/ 1-legged...- see the suffix, "cheat..."

Invert... - a move meaning to step back before the move and getting the move inverted that way. For example, instead of stepping a 180 in ward to sideswipe you step back and do an upside down sideswipe, hence the name "invert sideswipe". "Invert" moves is not the same as inverted moves. You can have an inverted' 540 (aka sideswipe) which is different from an invert' 540 (step back into an aerial switch or suicide swipe)

Inverted... - a move where the hips gets higher than the head while kicking. An inverted sideswipe is a sideswipe with the hips getting above the head's level. Is not the same as an "invert" move

Hyper... - a move landed with the round kicking leg giving the move a 540-liek appearance at the end. For instance, a corkscrew round, landing on the round kick leg is called a hyper corkscrew (which looks like a corkscrew directly into a 540 in mid air because you land on the forward/round kicking leg.)

Switch... - (also a suffix) a move that requires you to switch the legs. In a switch gainer, you switch the legs during a gainer. Not all technques, that have you switching the legs, are called a a switch. Switch usually refers to flip type moves that have you switching the legs (i.e. aerial switch, flashkick switch, switch gainer, etc.)

Flower... - A move that starts with the wushu "flower" arm movement. Arms rotate in circles around each other into a move.

Slanted/ Laid Back... - a move done where the back is slanted and laid back, but not inverted. A laid back 540 is a 540 where you lay back, but do not get your hips higher than your head

Pop Up...- a term for moves that take off with 2 legs instead of one. Such as a pop up 720 where it is like doing a one-leg 720 but with two legs. Pop up is usually a term that isnt usually required, but it helps to differieniate between one-leg techniques and two-leg take off techniques. (For instance: the cheat 720 is usualy talked about more often than a regular 720, so when asking help for a 720 its sometimes better to say pop up 720 so that people don't get this confused with the common 1-leg 720

Ax... - a term for a move done from an ax kick. When you do an ax webster, you throw an ax kick and kick right into a webster without putting the ax kick leg down on the ground first.

Swing Thru/ Miss-leg... - during a combo, isntead of setting your kicking leg down, you let it go directly into another move. Like in breakdance combos.

...Twist- a move with a twist in it, where the twist in the move is done like a butterfly twist ( the back leg rotates over the first leg.) In a 540 twist, you take off like a 540 but add a butterfly twist in it.

...Swipe: a move ending with "swipe" means that the move ends with a sideswiping maneuver (see definitions of different swipes in the moves section) where you do a kick with the hips getting higher over the head. For example, a Hyperswipe is a hyper twist but getting it inverted and landed with a sideswipe.

...Switch - (also a prefix) a move that requires you to switch the legs. In an aerial switch, you switch the legs during an aerial. Not all technques, that have you switching the legs, are called a switch. Switch usually refers to flip type moves that have you switching the legs (i.e. aerial switch, flashkick switch, switch gainer, etc.)

...Split - a move where you throw split in the move. For example a double leg split is when you do a double leg but split at the peak of the jump.

...Round - a move where you add a round kick to the end of the move (ex: butterfly twist round)

...Hook - a move where you add a hook to the end of the move.

...to Splits - a move landed in splits. A 540 to splits is a 540 landing in splits

New moves are always being invented so I believe this Trick dictionary will never be complete. Try not to be concerned with getting the most moves, but try to work up to getting moves with cleanliness, uniqueness, style, and adding your own variations to the move. Hopefully one day I'll be adding your move to the list, that is, if you haven't already invented a move. Keep up the motivation. That's the key to becoming great. Peace, keep trickin :o)
