Sango is an attractive sixteen year old youkai exterminator (taiji) who lives in the village of the Taiji with her younger brother, Kohaku, and her father who is the head of the village. This village has powerful humans that have learned to master the techniques of youkai extermination and help others remove pesky youkai from their village. Sango uses a katana and the Hiraikotsu, gas bombs, physical combat, and the help of Kirara, her pet youkai, a flying cat-like creature. Sango enjoyed her work as a taiji and one day the best taiji are called to a castle to help exterminate a spider youkai. The person who invited them there was Naraku and he possesses Kohaku and uses the boy to kill his own father and the rest of the taiji. Sango tries to stop Kohaku, but she can't and is hit in the back with Kohaku's scythe weapon. The guards of the casltle shoot Kohaku with tons of arrows and right before he dies, he comes to his senses and cries to Sango. Sango tries to crawl over to him before she dies but the guards think she's insane too and shoot her with arrows and she dies, or so everyone thinks. After she was buried, she emerges from the ground and is taken in by Naraku. He uses deception against her and says that her village was attacked by a youkai and everyone was killed. Sango becomes furious and asks who the youkai was. Naraku tells her it was Inuyasha. She then sets out on a mission, to kill Inuyasha. One of Naraku's servants gives her a Shikon shard which she puts in her back. She's still bleeding, but the pain is nulled. Sango finds Inuyasha and attacks him. Inuyasha somehow convinces her that it was Naraku that betrayed her and she collapses, the Shikon shard falling out of her back. Kagome nurses her back to health, and Sango joins the group to seek revenge. Also, her and Miroku seem to have a thing for eachother. She's also the one that reveals the secret of the creation of the Shikon no Tama, since her village is where the jewel originated from.
